O’Hara Pleased with 2017 Caulfield Cup Bound Single Gaze

This week Single Gaze put the writing on the wall for a big Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival campaign culminating with a Caulfield Cup 2017 bid, impressing jockey Kathy O’Hara with a smart Tuesday morning jump out at the Caulfield track.

Prepared in Canberra by Nick Olive, who missed the work due to the flu, the five-year-old daughter of Not A Single Doubt backed up from a winning trial at home on August 11 and was put through her paces by O’Hara in the mare’s first public appearance in Melbourne.

To date Single Gaze has amassed over $1.5 million in prize money over her 22 start career headlined by her 2016 Vinery Stud Stakes success.

That has been her sole elite level victory so far, but O’Hara believes the mare is right in line to add to her Group 1 tally this season after making the trip from Sydney to Melbourne for Tuesday morning’s jump out over 800m.

“I was really happy with it and she took to it [the Melbourne way of racing] like a duck to water with the way she came around the corner,” O’Hara told Racenet.

“She wasn’t flat out coming around the corner but she leaned right into it so I’m pretty pleased with her.

“She seems pretty natural on that leg. She has taken to it well and seems happy on that leg so it shouldn’t be a problem racing that way around.

“She only came down on Friday and has only been here a few days so she’s still setting in.

“This morning was to let her stretch her legs but not put too much pressure on her.”

Single Gaze rounded out a Brisbane campaign over the winter finishing runner-up to Chocante in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m) on June 10 at Doomben.

That followed her Group 2 PJ O’Shea Stakes (2200m) success at the same track and distance just a week earlier.

O’Hara has ridden the mare in 18 of her career runs including her 13 latest starts.

Olive has scheduled Saturday week’s Group 1 $1 million Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield for Single Gaze’s spring kick off, with O’Hara unsure whether or not the mare will have another jump out next week in the lead-up.

“I’m not sure whether they may or may not do another one next week but it was all about giving her a look at the track,” the jockey added.

“She has got some pretty big races lined up for her.

“she has got plenty of improvement left in her still but she’s got a long campaign ahead of her so bearing that in mind, all things are going really well.”

After the Memsie, Olive is eyeing runs in Group 1 races including the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 16, Caulfield’s Underwood Stakes (1800m) on October 1 and the Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (2000m) a fortnight later.

The big spring aim is the Group 1 $3 million BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 21

All-in Caulfield Cup 2017 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au list Single Gaze as a $34 shot with futures markets firmly led by the Godolphin-raced Hartnell ($9).

Now trained by James Cummings, seven-year-old Hartnell enjoyed a first-up win at Caulfield last Saturday in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m).

The horse ran second to Winx and third behind Almandin in last year’s Ladbrokes Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup respectively but is as yet to run in a Caulfield Cup field.
