We’ve Got This Building Well Towards Aurie’s Star Handicap

Jockey Craig Newitt is hopeful of securing the ride on We’ve Got This in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) after being impressed by the talented sprinter’s trial at Cranbourne on Monday morning.

We’ve Got This has been a standout for trainer Greg Eurell throughout his eighteen career starts to date, particularly down the famous Flemington straight whereby he finished second behind The Quarterback in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) most notably last spring.

Newitt was thrilled with the feel that We’ve Got This offered during his eventual two-length trial win this week and believes that the horse will prove tough to beat when he resumes in the 2017 Aurie’s Star Handicap on August 12th.

“He went super, it wasn’t about how fast he went or how big a margin he could put on them, he was just out there to keep him ticking over but he felt terrific,” Newitt told Racing Victoria.

“The plan is for him to resume in the Aurie’s Star and I’m hoping I get the ride.

“He has had a jumpout at Cranbourne and this was his second solid hit-out so he is coming along nicely.

“I just sat back off them and then let him cruise in to the trial under his own steam.

“He barely raised a sweat and felt very good going to the line.”

Posting a total of four wins and seven minors during his racing career so far, We’ve Got This posted dominant and consecutive wins in a pair of Victorian sprints in early 2016 before being sent to the paddock.

Taking plenty of benefit from a first-up run for third in the Group 3 The Heath (1100m), the Hard Spun gelding progressed to third in the Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) a fortnight prior to the Gilgai Stakes, but failed to fire in two proceeding starts.

Having not been seen at the races since beating only one runner home in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) at Ladbrokes Park on November 12th, We’ve Got This has reportedly taken wholesale benefit from more than eight months away from competition.
