Tucanchoo Heads Tattersall’s Cup 2017 Field & Odds

It is a wide open affair in 2017 Tattersall’s Cup betting ahead of the Doomben Group 3 on the weekend with the Team Hawkes-trained Tucanchoo narrow favourite to take out the Brisbane staying showdown.

The first of the Tattersall’s Tiara Day Group status races, this season’s $200,000 Group 3 Carlton Mid Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) is set to run as Doomben Race 5 at 2:37pm (AEST) on Saturday.

A final field of just eight runners is assembled for the handicap clash and the latest Tattersall’s Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have three of the hopefuls under $4 for the win.

Current $2.25 favourite drawn in barrier seven and set to carry 56kg with Tommy Berry in the saddle is in-form seven-year-old Tucanchoo.

The gelding comes off back-to-back seconds at Rosehill in good company and with winning form up to 2400m, should enjoy the step-up from 2000m last Saturday to 2200m here on the short turnaround.

Occupying the second line of Tattersall’s Cup betting at an equal $3.50 each are then Rudy and Pemberley at opposite ends of the weight scale.

Helen Page’s Gold Coast-trained Red Dazzler six-year-old Rudy carries the 59.5kg top weight on the weekend from barrier two.

Tim Clark was aboard for the horse’s Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) third and Group 2 PJ O’Shea Stakes (2200m) second before Hugh Bowman rode the horse for a last-start fifth behind Chocante a fortnight back in the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m).

Clark returns to the saddle on the weekend, Rudy down in class and a livewire chance to post his first win over further than a mile even with the big weight.

Victorian raider Pemberley meanwhile gets in on 54kg with Corey Brown

ride the Ciaron Maher-trained five-year-old for the third time on the trot.

Pemberley was last seen finishing third in the Brisbane Cup over this track and distance as a $17 shot and, being well-weighted again, shapes-up as a winning hope on the final major race day of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Of the longer-priced Tatt’s Cup contenders the value could lie in the likes of early market mover Morendi ($21 into $18) out to atone for his dead last (14th) in the Brisbane Cup or last start Ipswich winner by six and a half lengths War Baby ($13).
