Injury may have plagued the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival bid for young filly Nettoyer but her Warwick Farm-based trainer Wendy Roche is hoping for same late season black-type in the Sunshine Coast Guineas 2017 next month.

A nicely-bred Sebring three-year-old, Nettoyer was originally being aimed at a shot at the Group 1 Queensland Oaks run over 2200m at Doomben this year.

Plans went amiss however after Nettoyer was found to have a bone chip in her shoulder and the recovery time also saw her miss out on a shot at last weekend’s Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).

“She was being set for the Oaks but she went lame and we found that she had a sliver off her shoulder, a bone chip,” Roche told Racing Victoria.

“She spent seven weeks in a box and I was trying to rush her to get to the Oaks but we obviously failed at that.

“She was nominated or the Guineas in Queensland and I thought she would’ve gone very close to winning but she was third emergency so she stayed in Sydney.”

Roche enjoyed a consolation win on June 10 with the filly however who broke her maiden status at her third career start taking out a Benchmark 72 against her own age by a runaway 10 lengths over 2000m at Randwick.

Apprentice Rachael King rode Nettoyer on just 51kg against a field of more experienced three-year-olds and the filly showed a liking for the Heavy (10) conditions with a blistering turn of foot after hitting the lead 300m out from the winning post.

That barnstorming success could see her head up to Caloundra on July 1 for a drop down in distance but step-up in class for the $125,000 Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) before a Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival campaign later in the year.

“She’s pulled up amazing [since her win] and it’s almost like she didn’t go around,” Roche said.

“There’s the Sunshine Coast Guineas over a mile on a big track and it can rain so that’s an option for her.

“She’ll probably go there to learn how to travel and then she’ll go to the paddock for three weeks and then we might even look for some races in Melbourne.

“I would say that anything from a mile up could suit her but I think her best distance will be anything at 2000m, 2400m or even further.

“I think she probably has the makings of the best horse I’ve trained.”

A $20,000 buy from the 2015 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Nettoyer hasn’t been the easiest filly to train.

The small-framed up-and-comer has had her Warwick Farm trackwork restricted due to her notorious temperament, but Roche believes the filly is finally starting to put it all together.

“She’s always shown ability but she’s just immature,” she said

“We bought her as a yearling at Easter and she was very underdeveloped.

“We had the foresight to see that she was going to furnish into a nice horse because she honestly looked like a weanling.

“She wore a foal halter as a yearling and she’s only just gone into a normal bridle now and she still has a foal muzzle.

“She honestly does not know how to gallop properly yet so there’s definitely a lot of improvement to come.”
