The Ipswich Cup can run a capacity field of sixteen and the Ipswich Turf Club have extended the nominations deadline until 9am on Tuesday, June 13, 2017.
Kiwi stayer Benzini ran fourth in last Saturday’s Group 2 $300,000 Evergreen Turf Brisbane Cup (2200m) at Doomben and will have to back up week to week if Hunterville trainers Adrian and Harry Bull decide to run the seven year old in the Ipswich Cup.
Benzini has been placed twice in Group 1 company in New Zealand for a second in the NZ$250,000 Livamol Classic (2040m) at Hastings in October 2015 and was also second in the in the NZ$200,000 Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie on March 16 this year.
The tough gelding was also the winner of last year’s Brisbane Cup which was run over 2400m at Eagle Farm.
Self Sense is another stayer who will be backing up in the week after finishing near the tail of the field when thirteenth in the Brisbane Cup but the David Brideoake trained six year old will be better suited in the Ipswich Cup.
Self Sense has been out of the winner’s stall for over two years but did produce his best recent run two starts back when third in a 2000m Handicap at Flemington on May 20.
The Robert Heathcote trained Kaiser Franz is also among the nominations for the Ipswich Cup and sent the punters looking for the form guide when he won at $61 two starts back in the Group 3 $125,000 Channel Seven Premier’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm on May 27.
Kaiser Franz also ran in last Saturday’s Brisbane Cup but couldn’t repeat his winning effort to finish tenth behind the Kiwi stayer Chocante.
The Michael Nolan trained Jumbo Prince kicked off his Winter Carnival campaign in great style dead heating with Col’N’Lil in the Listed $150,000 Weetwood Handicap (1200m) at Toowoomba on April 8.
The Toowoomba trained galloper then ran a solid race two starts later to finish third on the Listed $100,000 Member’s Handicap (1600m) at Doomben on May 13 but then failed to fire at Eagle Farm when twelfth to Kaiser Franz in the Premier’s Cup.
