A full field faces off in this season’s $350,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day on Saturday and five are under $10 for the win.
Leading the Queensland Guineas odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.80 to post a fourth straight win following the narrow effort from out wide (barrier 16 of 17) in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1400m) is Niccanova.
There are plenty of longer priced hopes with claims however should the favourite not fire on the day including perennial fourth placegetter Caerless Choice ($14) who gets the blinkers on here and early market mover River Racer ($12 into $8.50).
So will the best in betting salute or is there value in tipping an upset Queensland Guineas result at Doomben on Saturday?
1st
#12 River Racer ($8.50)
Happy to follow the early money trail on this progressive Les Ross-trained filly despite the time between this and her last win. Fred Best Classic a fortnight ago behind Saturday’s favourite was brave and saw her beaten only 1.5 lengths. Yet to race over a mile, but she’s a genuine Doomben track specialist (5-1-2-2) and if she runs out the distance from her nice barrier she can turn the tables.
2nd
#4 Niccanova ($3.80)
Deserving favourite who hasn’t put a foot wrong all prep. The Toowoomba-trained galloper has winning form at this track and distance from February and was good winning the Fred Best last time out from out wide. Has lost just once to date and has the consistency and class to give these a run for their money again.
3rd
#5 Caerless Choice ($14)
Good price on offer for his Paul Messara-trained son of Redoute’s Choice from Scone. Another proven miler who won at home over this distance during the spring. Has run fourth in his three latest starts including the very nice effort in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) in late April. Extended out to 2000m at Rosehill last time out and will relish the drop back to 1600m for this in a winnable race from the gun barrier two draw.
