A key lead-up to next month’s Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) back at the track, Saturday’s $250,000 Group 2 Mitavite BRC Sires’ Produce (1400m) has attracted 27 juveniles at early entry stage.
Waller has three nominees led by progressive Snitzel colt Tangled who has won his past two on the trot, including the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben on May 13.
That is the traditional lead-up to the BRC Sires’ and JJ Atkins, the latter of which Tangled is the $7 second favourite in futures markets to win through Ladbrokes.com.au.
The other Waller-trained BRC Sires’ Produce nominations this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival are Hinchinbrook filly Madame Moustache and last start Warwick Farm winner over 1400m Sambro.
In the Champagne Classic the two best behind Tangled nominated for a rematch in the Sires’ Produce this weekend are the Gary Moore-trained runner-up All Too Huiying and Fastnet Rock filly Italia Bella from the Sunshine Coast.
All Too Hard colt All Too Huiying was only a half-length beaten for second on the back of his brave third to Whispered Secret in the wet at Randwick on April 8 in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m).
He’ll enjoy the extra metres in Brisbane if accepted into the BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes field on Saturday, but remains a maiden after six career starts.
The Stuart Kendrick-trained Italia Bella meanwhile has had just the two career starts to date including the brave third as a $26 roughie in the Champagne Classic.
Early favourite in all-in JJ Atkins betting meanwhile is the Stephen Autridgue & Jamie Richards-trained Kiwi Melody Belle ($6) who is nominated for a debut run down under on the weekend.
An early tip to become the first JJ Atkins winning filly since Linky Dink (2008), the daughter of Commands has enjoyed a trio of wins from five starts back home in New Zealand to date.
Her latest on April 1 was over 1400m in a Group 1 Sires’ Produce race and she’s had a Brisbane trial at Deagon over 1050m crossing a close second on May 9 to bring her on for this weekend.
The other standout JJ Atkins-bound juvenile nominated for a lead-up run at Eagle Farm on Saturday is the fellow New Zealand raider Qiji Phoenix ($9).
Prepared at Ruakaka by Donna Logan & Chris Gibbs, the Not A Single Doubt colt is undefeated to date boasting three wins from as many career starts.
The latest was at Ellerslie over the mile on April 22 and coming back to 1400m before returning to 1600m for the JJ Atkins will be the test this Saturday in Brisbane.
Other standout BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes nominees include the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Group 1 performed Taking Aim who comes off a Gold Coast Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic win and Chris Munce’s Champagne Classic fourth-placed Seidnazar colt Ours To Keep.
The BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes 2017 final field is out on Wednesday with betting at Ladbrokes.com.au to open shortly after.
