Due to jump as Doomben Race 8 at 4:39pm (AEST) on 10,000 Day, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Mittys Rough Habit Plate (2000m) field is down to 14 hopefuls after two scratched horses including the hot favourite Mongolian Wolf.
Trainer Darren Weir has opted instead to run his last start Group 3 Frank Packer Plate winner Mongolian Wolf at Caulfield in the Noel Rundle Handicap (2000m) before heading up to the sunshine state next week.
It is now a wide open affair in the Rough Habit Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with three runners battling for top spot including the narrow $4.20 favourite Order Again, coming off a 1500m win at Eagle Farm by a runaway 7.5 lengths, drawn the outside barrier.
The dangers shape-up as the Chris Waller-trained market mover Veladero ($7 into $4.40) last seen running second to Mongolian Khan in the Frank Packer and Violate ($4.80) whose lead-up run produced a second at Eagle Farm in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m).
Just off the top three is then Shocking Luck ($5) over from New Zealand, the consistent son of Melbourne Cup winner Shocking better suited to the 2000m after a second on debut down under over 1500m at Ipswich.
With so many livewire chances, below we’ve summed up our Rough Habit Plate 2017 tips on the gallopers heading towards next month’s Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm.
1st
#1 Veladero ($4.40)
With Mongolian Khan out, Veladero looks the one to beat and the Sydney Frank Packer Plate form the one to follow. Has won a subsequent trial over 1030m at Rosehill and has winning form up to 1800m. Kerrin McEvoy rides and the rain-affected track will suit.
2nd
#14 Shocking Luck ($5)
The Kiwis have been very good down under again over the past few months in the three-years-old races and that could continue with this Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards-trained gelding. He’s run second in his three latest runs including over 2000m in Group 2 class back home in February. First run in Australia was on May 1 over 1500m at Ipswich when nosed out and he’ll be better for the run and eats up the extra distance in this.
3rd
#12 Order Again ($4.20)
Plenty of money now coming in for this Brian Smith-trained Iffraaj gelding who gets the chance to reproduce his dazzling last start victory stepping up in grade. In a Benchmark 70 over 1500m at Eagle Farm on May 3, he blitzed a field by 7.5 lengths in the wet. Has work to do from out wide, but looks like he’ll run all day.
