The in-form Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Stampede may be drawn wide for his Doomben 10,000 Day run in Brisbane on Saturday but remains clear favourite in the Chairman’s Handicap 2017 field and betting markets.

Set to run as Doomben Race 6 at 3:26pm (AEST), this season’s $125,000 Group 3 Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) has attracted a 15 starter field of staying types.
Heading the latest Chairman’s Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.90 to enjoy successive wins after a Listed Wagga Cup victory over the distance last time out is High Chaparral stallion Stampede.
The four-year-old has a 50% winning strike rate over his eight start career to date, but needs to handle a wide barrier (14 of 15) and step-up in weight (54kg to 56kg) this weekend.
Kerrin McEvoy comes on for the ride and has work to do to keep the galloper in winning form after Stampede faded late in the Wagga Cup and only just held on.
Three of his rivals are also under $10 for the win in Chairman’s Stakes betting this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including Chocante ($5) in gate eight with Jim Byrne in the saddle.
Well-weighted getting in on the 54kg minimum, the Stephen Marsh-trained Kiwi raider chases his first victory since a Group 3 success over 2100m back home last November.
A four-year-old son of former Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, Chocante is bred to go the distance and after doing it tough from out wide over the Ellerslie mile in the Group 2 Easter Stakes (1600m) last time out he’ll get a better go of it down under on Saturday.
The other single-figure chances are Neverland ($6.50) out in gate 13 for Victoria’s best horseman Darren Weir and the Mick Price-trained The Chairman ($9) who comes off back-to-back thirds.
Big Brown five-year-old mare Neverland takes on the boys here second-up after finishing sixth over 1800m at Flemington on Anzac Day.
She’ll be fitter for that run and was in previous ace form back in WA over the summer including her second to Star Exhibit in a blanket quinella on New Year’s Eve in the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m).
Drawn a treat in gate three with Brenton Avdulla booked to ride is Price’s High Chaparral gelding The Chairman.
A perennial placegetter, the galloper was last seen crossing third behind Rhythm To Spare over the Caulfield mile a fortnight back and should be peaking third-up getting up in distance for this.
