2017 Victory Stakes Tips & Odds Update

There are just six remaining hopefuls in the Victory Stakes 2017 field and betting markets at Eagle Farm for Saturday, updated odds and our tips on the official Doomben 10,000 lead-up found below.

Set to run as Eagle Farm Race 6 at 3:07pm (AEST), this season’s $200,000 Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) features a diminutive field after the early scratching of Good Standing who instead runs in the Hawkesbury Guineas in Sydney on Saturday.

Updated Victory Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au – who are offering their Favourite vs Field markets on the weight-for-age feature – are dominated by Music Magnate.

Bjorn Baker’s Group 1 winner took out the Doomben 10,000 last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and is tracking towards at title defence in that race on May 13.

On the way the Written Tycoon five-year-old is out to pick-up another Group victory running at Eagle Farm for the first time since his failed 16th behind Under The Louvre in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) last season.

His latest run produced a disappointing 12th behind Russian Revolution in Rosehill’s Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) on March 18, but Music Magnate will relish a drop in class facing just five rivals with Brisbane’s best Jeff Lloyd in the saddle on Saturday.

The dangers in Victory Stakes betting shape-up as the other Group 1 winner in the field Takedown ($3.40), flying Brisbane-trained mare Tumbler ($5) who is undefeated over the distance and Hopfgarten ($5.50) for local horseman Robert Heathcote.

So will Music Magnate get the job done for the punters or is there an upset Victory Stakes result pending?

Our 2017 Victory Stakes Trifecta Tip is #2 Music Magnate from #6 Miss Cover Girl and #1 Takedown

1st

#2 Music Magnate ($2.30)

Despite doubts he would run, Music Magnate looks set to line-up in his Doomben 10,000 tune-up and is definitely the sprinter to beat over this class and distance. He’ll relish the extra metres after The Galaxy run in tougher company last time out and also gets firmer going than the Heavy track in Sydney. Is a Brisbane Group 1 winner in a small field and with Lloyd in the saddle should get the job done without a worry.

2nd

#6 Miss Cover Girl ($15)

One of the race roughies, this locally-trained Monashee Mountain mare shouldn’t be discounted completely. Prepared by Kelly Schweida, the five-year-old has won over $827,000 in prize money and is no donkey. She took out last winter’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) at the Eagle Farm track as a $21 roughie and so has form. Last run was a 10th when still under four lengths beaten at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions Day, but she’s trialled well since and goes well fresh with a strong first-up record (7-3-1-2).

3rd

#1 Takedown ($3.40)

Gary Moore-trained Winterbottom Stakes winner in Perth over this distance, Stratum four-year-old Takedown is internationally performed and has won over $1.5 million in prize money. He is out to improve second-up after running second last (8th) in his first start back home after the Hong Kong run and will be fitter for that Sydney run in the wet. Won the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Randwick second-up last time in over this distance and is right in the mix again over his pet metres (9-4-0-1).
