Ten youngsters are in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Frank Packer Plate (2000m), which is set to run as Randwick Race 3 at 1:15pm (AEST) on the All Aged Stakes Day program.
Heading the latest Frank Packer Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.60 to enjoy successive Sydney wins at Royal Randwick is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Sebring colt Acatour.
He won the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) over the mile at the track on April 1 by a runaway three and a half-lengths and looks like he’ll easily make the step up to 2000m this weekend on the two week turnaround.
His biggest dangers looking at the Frank Packer Plate betting markets shape-up as the Kiwi expat Mongolian Wolf ($3.60) and the rails-drawn Veladero ($7.50) coming off a third in the Carbine Club Stakes.
So can Acatour get the job done or is there value tipping an upset Frank Packer Plate result from the likes of Bjorn Baker’s last start Tulloch Stakes third placegetter Captain Duffy ($9) or the market mover Screamarr ($9)?
1st
#3 Mongolian Wolf ($3.60)
The three-year-old Kiwis have been ultra-impressive again this autumn and this now Darren Weir-trained Pluck gelding debuts down under on Saturday. He’s got form around Gingernuts having finished third in the Group 2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) before the NZ Derby 14th over the mile and a half. This distance will suit, that form has already been franked and if he shows up first-up in the wet he’s a winning chance.
2nd
#4 Captain Duffy ($9)
How the Geelong Classic winner from the spring gets through a really wet track is questionable, but he was in the mix when third to subsequent ATC Derby winner Jon Snow in the Tulloch Stakes over this distance at Rosehill last start. This is an easier race, should be hitting his peak and if he gets through the going there won’t be much finishing in front of him.
3rd
#1 Acatour ($2.60)
Well-deserved top spot in betting after the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes win here last time out by the big margin. The extra metres are a non-issue and could be hard to run down at the short price.
