The Kiwi raider Gingernuts remains firm favourite in the latest 2017 Australian Derby betting markets for the feature three-years-old race at Royal Randwick this afternoon.

Minimal rain in the past 24 hours has seen the Randwick track firm to a Heavy (8) for Day 1 of ‘The Championships’ and that looks ideal for the Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards-trained Gingernuts.
In his Australian debut the son of Iffraaj backed up from a Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) victory at Ellerslie to take out the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on a Heavy (10).
He now gets back up to the mile and a half for Randwick Race 7 at 3:50pm (AEDT) this afternoon where he’ll be out to salute for the punters in the $2 million Group 1 BMW Australian Derby (2400m).
Recent history shows the strong form line of New Zealand-trained horses in the ATC Derby including three winners in the past four years: It’s A Dundeel (2013), Mongolian Khan (2014) and Tavago (2016).
Gingernuts is out to continue the successful Kiwi raid on the classic and complete the Rosehill Guineas – Australian Derby double for the first time since Criterion (2014).

He has been steadily backed in the ATC Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au in from $3.50 to $3.10.
Second elect at $4.40 is the Rosehill Guineas runner-up and Randwick Guineas winner Inference, out to turn the tables on his last start conqueror.
Easing out in the markets and looking great value for a spot in the Australian Derby trifecta is the other New Zealander visitor in the mix, Jon Snow.
He opened at $6 but is out to $8 to hand co-trainer Murray Baker with his fourth Australian Derby success.
Also a son of Iffrajj, the colt was third to Gingernuts in the NZ Derby before his nearly three length Rosehill win last Saturday in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) on a Heavy (9).
He shapes-up as the forgotten horse in the Australian Derby field, will relish getting back up to 2400m today and represents great value.
Also easing out from $8 to $9 is the rails-drawn Anaheim ridden by Hugh Bowman for last year’s ATC Derby winning trainer Trent Busuttin – now based at Cranbourne – the Fastnet Rock colt is looking to improve on his fourth in the Rosehill Guineas.
The firming track will suit and the inside barrier has produced the past three Australian Derby winners in two positives for the galloper.
One of the genuine Australian Derby market movers meanwhile is Ruthven backed right in from $26 to $15.
Ciaron Maher saddles-up the Domesday colt in Sydney for the first time on the back of a second in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley on March 17.
