The Mission has led from start to finish to post a comfortable two length win in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m) and stamp himself as a legitimate Champagne Stakes prospect.

The Mission jumping the rank outsider in the Schweppervescence field, but the colt did his chance of an upset no harm when he jumped well and took up the running across the back straight; setting a reasonable tempo for the field of nine.

Racing a touch green, jockey Corey Brown faced something of a fight to get The Mission to settle into a rhythm but the pair travelled well into the straight and led the field by a length.

Immediately responding when asked for an extra effort, the Choisir colt kicked clear and maintained well to the line; clearly relishing the soft ground on his way to a maiden race win.

Representative for father and trainer Paul Perry, Shannon Perry said that the team was pleased with The Mission’s performance to win The Schweppervescence and revealed that a start in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) in three weeks’ time.

“It was terrific,” Perry said after the race.

“On his work on Tuesday, dad said that if he can just relax mid-race, he’s going to be hard to beat.

“Missing the Slipper might have been a blessing, because now he’ll go to Randwick in good form and might be the fresh horse on the scene.

“We might go to the mile (Champagne Stakes). We’ll see what Corey says and see how the horse pulls up, and make a decision then.”

Brown delivered a smart performance aboard The Mission to win The Schweppervescence and is confident that the horse will take benefit from the run into his next start.

“Today he got very agresssive and when I started getting on top of him, that’s when he started to throw his head and carry on like a young, immature horse,”

“When I pushed the button at about the 300m, I tried to hold onto him as long as I could because he’d done so much work early, but when I squeezed him at the 300m, he really lengthened well.

“He did his best work from around the 300m to home. Stepping up to the mile I think he might need something taken off and just going a little bit easier around his head.”

In being crowned The Schweppervescence winner, The Mission has now posted one win and two minors, through six career starts.
