Flying New Zealand raider Gingernuts is one of the more intriguing editions to the Rosehill Guineas 2017 field of three-year-old stayers on Golden Slipper Stakes Day on Saturday.

Gingernuts is out to be the first New Zealand-trained Rosehill Guineas winner in 2017 since Volkstok’n’barrell (pictured, 2015). Photo: Steve Hart.
Due to run as Race 6 at 3:25pm (AEDT), this year’s $600,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) features a final field of a dozen hopefuls.
Three last-start winners are in the mix including the Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards-trained Kiwi Gingernuts chasing his fourth win on the trot.
Opie Bosson crosses the Tasman to ride the son of Iffraaj in Sydney on Saturday from a gun barrier four draw, which last produced a Rosehill Guineas winner in De Beers (2006).
New Zealand-trained horses have a good recent record in the race with wins by Jimmy Choux (2011), It’s A Dundeel (2013) and Volkstok’n’barrell (2015).
Gingernuts was last seen taking out the Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie on March 4 from barrier 13 of 18.
He drops back in distance on the weekend for his Australian race debut and could prove the one to beat in the ATC Derby lead-up.
Also coming off wins are Inference for Team Hawkes and the Chris Waller-trained Sizzling Bullet drawn in barriers three and five respectively.
Tommy Berry continues his association aboard So You Think colt Inference who comes off a second-up win at Randwick in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).
Inference handled a Heavy (10) track that day suggesting the step up to 2000m this weekend will be a non-issue as the colt chases the Randwick Guineas – Rosehill Guineas double last completed by It’s A Dundeel (2013).
Sizzling Bullet is out to hand Waller with his first Rosehill Guineas win, the flying son of Snitzel coming off successive Randwick wins over 1800m and 2000m respectively against easier company.
Waller has also accepted for spruik horse Comin’ Through, the half-brother to Criterion out to post his first win of the season on the back of a third in the Randwick Guineas.
The other standout contender is the James Cummings-trained Prized Icon who defeated Inference (3rd) home in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) last Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The More Than Ready colt has had two runs this time in, the latest being a close second behind Hey Doc in Melbourne’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).
