Five elite level races headline the Rosehill Gardens line-up this weekend including the short-distance specialists facing off in the $700,000 Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), which drew a bumper 22 early entries.
Looking to continue the gun recent run of mares in the handicap clash following the success of Sweet Idea (2015) and Griante (2016) is Encosta De Lago four-year-old English.
Co-trainer Waterhouse won the race with Snowland (2003) and again with the aforementioned Sweet Idea two years back and looks to have a livewire hope with the in-form English in 2017.
The mare comes off a first-up win in the mud at Randwick from March 4 in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) and will only improve second-up over the extra distance this weekend.
English is out to improve on her sixth behind Griante in The Galaxy results last year, which she ran on the back of a Challenge Stakes win, and her only other Rosehill run to date produced the 2015 Golden Slipper Stakes second to Vancouver.
Not since Jetball (1994) has a last start winner saluted in The Galaxy, giving English a notable hoodoo to overcome this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Current all-in The Galaxy odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have English posted the $7.50 second favourite with futures markets led by the Bjorn Baker-trained Music Magnate ($6.50).
A five-year-old won of Written Tycoon, Music Magnate comes off a fifth to Le Romain in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) from March 4.
The Doomben 10,000 winner from last winter failed to let down on the Heavy (10) Randwick track and ran six lengths off the winner.
Prior to that he won the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill where he boasts a solid record of two wins, a second and a third heading towards The Galaxy 2017.
Peter & Paul Snowden are in with two livewire entries Redzel and Russian Revolution.
Snitzel four-year-old Redzel is a gun over the metres with four wins, a second and a third from eight starts at 1100m to date.
He comes off a second to English when beaten by the barest of margins first-up in the Challenge Stakes, a race that last produced a The Galaxy winner in Tiger Tees (9th in 2014).
Stablemate Russian Revolution is at $8.50 for the win currently, just ahead of Redzel ($9.50), the Snitzel colt out to be the first three-year-old winner since Shellscrape (2010).
Russian Revolution won his opening four career starts including the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last October before suffering his only loss to date.
He finished fourth to Flying Artie beaten two lengths down the Flemington straight during the Melbourne Cup Carnival in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) and has won two subsequent Randwick trials ahead of his return.
The only other three-year-old The Galaxy entries are the lightly-raced Redoute’s Choice colt Glenall and Robbie Laing’s Fastnet Rock filly Missrock coming off an 1100m win in Melbourne.
