One of the Spring Carnival’s most highly-decorated cards will be contested today as runners descend on Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne for Derby Day 2016.

It is a fine day in the greater Melbourne metropolitan region today and subsequently, the Flemington track has been rated a ‘Good 4’ and will suit horses who relish a reasonably firm surface.
2016 Derby Day action will officially get underway with the running of the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) for three-year-olds at 11:45am local time, and will conclude with the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) at 5:20pm.

The Carbine Club Stakes was won by Mahuta in 2015 and several similarly-talented horses have been confirmed in this year’s field, including Hey Doc, Morton’s Fork and Comin’ Through.
Some of the spring’s most exciting fillies will contest the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m), while all of Wild Rain, Sheidel and Vezalay will line up for the Group 3 Sensis Stakes (1100m).
The winner of the Group 3 Lexus Stakes (2500m) will be granted ballot-free entry into Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup, while the day’s Group 1 racing will begin at 2:25pm local time with a particularly exciting edition of the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m); featuring all of Astern, Extreme Choice and Star Turn.
The Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) is a particularly open affair this year and will run as Race 6 on Derby Day, while the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) will peg a capacity field of three-year-old stayers against one-another for one of the Spring Carnival’s most highly-coveted prizes.
2016 Derby Day will draw to a close following the running of the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) and the Salinger Stakes.
