Last spring Mongolian Khan broke an eight-year drought for the favourites with his Caulfield Cup success and this weekend all the money is on Jameka to go back-to-back for the punters in the 2016 edition of the world’s richest mile and a half handicap.

A number of historical factors go against the 2016 Caulfield Cup favourite Jameka on Saturday in the Group 1 classic. Photo: Ultimate Racing Photos.
The $3 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) runs as Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEDT) on Saturday with a full field of 18 in the mix, markets at Ladbrokes.com.au all about Ciaron Maher’s mare Jameka.
She is at $3.60 in Caulfield Cup betting to become the first Caulfield Cup winning mare since Southern Speed (2011) after her gun lead-up including the last start Turnbull Stakes second behind star Sydney raider Hartnell.
There is big hoodoo for the four-year-old daughter of Myboycharlie to overcome however.
As a three-year-old last November she took out the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m), and no Victorian Oaks winner has ever gone on to win a Caulfield Cup since the latter was inaugurated in 1879.
If she overcomes that and gets the job done on Saturday heading the Caulfield Cup results, Jameka will be the shortest-priced favourite to win since Elvstroem ($3 in 2004).
So does she have what it takes to go back-to-back for the Caulfield Cup favourites on Saturday?

Why Jameka Can Win the 2016 Caulfield Cup
- She has had the ideal lead-up winning the Naturalism Stakes and beaten by runaway winner Hartnell in the Turnbull Stakes last time out
- The Turnbull Stakes has produced 14 of the past 17 Caulfield Cup winners
- She is the right age as four-year-olds have won three of the past six editions
- She has the ideal weight (52.5kg), the exact kilos carried to victory by Descarado (2010) and Southern Speed (2011) in recent years
- Jockey Nicholas Hall won the race only three years ago on Fawkner (2013)
- She has winning form at the track (4-1-1-1)
Why Jameka Wont’ be the 2016 Caulfield Cup Winner
- No Naturalism Stakes winner has gone on to win the Caulfield Cup in the past 30 years; of the 16 that have tried just one (Douro Valley – 2nd in 2007) has placed
- She comes into barrier 12, which hasn’t produced a winner in over 30 years
- Favourites have won just 2 of the past 10 editions of the race
- The only mare since Ethereal (2001) to win the Caulfield Cup was Southern Speed (2011)
- She only has a 22% win rate
- Ciaron Maher is yet to saddle-up a Caulfield Cup winner
- If successful she’ll be the shortest-priced mare to win since Leilani ($3.25 in 1974)
