2016 Ethereal Stakes Field & Betting: Top Three Hard to Split

Three of the 15 fillies facing off in the Ethereal Stakes 2016 at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday are battling for favouritism in betting to win the Crown Oaks lead-up.

Running as Race 4 at 2:00pm (AEDT) as part of a bumper 10-race Caulfield Cup Day program on the weekend, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 New Zealand Bloodstock Ethereal Stakes (2000m) is shaping up as a close affair.

Heading the latest Ethereal Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, originally paying $4 each for the win before a number of slight market moves, are: Sebring Dream ($3.80), Eleonora ($4.80) and Moqueen ($5).

Drawn a treat in barrier two with Blake Shinn booked for the ride, the Anthony Cummings-trained Uncle Mo filly Moqueen chases back-to-back wins and is easing in the markets making her the value punt.

She saluted in the Listed Dulcify Quality (1600m) at Randwick on October 1 and travels south this weekend stepping up in distance ahead of a possible Flemington run on November 3 in the $1 million Group 1 VRC Crown Oaks (2500m).

She pays $15 in pre-field Crown Oaks betting, a price set to firm if she salutes over the 2000m this weekend in her first look at further than a mile.

Sebring Dream is shorter in futures Crown Oaks odds at a current quote of $11.

The Lindsay Park-trained daughter of Sebring has had two shots at the Caulfield track without a top three finish and has a wide barrier 13 draw to overcome this weekend.

There’s time to make up ground however and she is out to improve on her sixth to Global Glamour on the quick back-up out of last Saturday’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) when beaten under four lengths.

She is the early market mover and is now the clear favourite to win the Ethereal Stakes.

The second fancy for Saturday is the visiting New Zealander, Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman’s Makfi filly Eleonora.

She has had two runs down under and is also 2016 Crown Oaks bound at $15 to win the Group 1 pre-Saturday’s Caulfield Cup Day results.

On debut down under she saluted over 1300m at Geelong before her 11th at Flemington on October 2 in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) she is looking to make up for this weekend.

Also at single-figures in an open top half of the markets are the Edward Manifold Stakes runner-up Bella Sorellastra ($8) with the outside alley and the James Cummings-trained Savvan ($8.50) also drawn wide in barrier 12 with top hoop Craig Williams in the saddle for her Group race debut.
