Sydney’s premier trainer Gai Waterhouse celebrated her maiden Thousand Guineas win with star filly Global Glamour scoring the interstate double on the quick back-up after the Flight Stakes in Sydney last Saturday.
Waterhouse enjoyed her ninth Flight Stakes win at Randwick, but today’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) result was her first victory.
Completing the Flight Stakes – Thousand Guineas double for the first time since Guelph (2013), classy Star Witness filly Global Glamour got the gun run with Kerrin McEvoy aboard
McEvoy also rode Guelph for her win three years ago, and was able to get this year’s Thousand Guineas winner into a lovely rhythm throughout in the mile classic.
It was a gutsy all-the-way performance with Global Glamour going forward to take the lead on the inside soon after the jump.
She led from the Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Legless Veuve, while Chris Waller’s equal favourite Foxplay was off the fence midfield.
Around the turn Legless Veuve looked poised, while the Simon Miller-trained Perth filly Whispering Brook cut the corner saving ground along with Shane Nichols’ Quezette Stakes winner three back I Am A Star.
Down the straight Global Glamour ($4.60) powered home and held off her challengers hitting the line ahead of the well-priced I Am A Star ($26), while Whispering Brook ($8.50) rounded out the Thousand Guineas trifecta in third.
Foxplay ran fourth, not looking to handle the Caulfield track, while the Kiwi La Luna Rossa who had been up on the speed early weakened out.
“She’s done a great job,” McEvoy said, referring equally to the winning filly and her trainer Waterhouse.
“To back her [Global Glamour] up within the week. She was pretty dominant there in the Flight Stakes.
“Timmy Clark, to his credit, wasn’t able to be here today…he gave me a few little pointers to keep her sweet.
“She got out [of the gates] on and got into a lovely rhythm.
“She’s very tough. She’s well put together, well made, light on her feet and she’s got her good share of ability as well.
“I knew I was going to be hard to catch and she proved that.”
Waterhouse’s former racing manager and now co-trainer Adrian Bott was delighted with the Thousand Guineas result after celebrating his first Group 1 win only last weekend with the same gun filly.
“She’s an absolute star,” he said.
“She’s going to be a very special filly and she’s proven that today.
“We thought she was going to be one of our favourites going into the Slipper and that didn’t work out, but she’s come back in great order.
“She’s looking really seasoned…today we saw her take it to another level again.”
There’s a chance the team will race-on with Global Glamour and possibly consider a Melbourne Cup Carnival run, but Bott said it would all depend on how she pulled through the tough run and seven day turnaround.
