Set to run as Race 6 at 3:15pm (AEST) on Sydney’s Golden Pendant Day program on the weekend, this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Schweppes Gloaming Stakes (1800m) features a line-up of 10 runners.
Heading the latest Gloaming Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.60 is the James Cummings-trained Group 1 winner Prized Icon.
The More Than Ready colt took out Randwick’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) as a two-year-old in mid-April before two unplaced runs this campaign.
His latest on September 3 saw him cross over nine lengths back for sixth when failing to beat home any of his rivals as the beaten favourite behind Hartnell in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).
He gets the chance to atone back against his own age, up in distance, down in class and on a firmer track on Saturday.
The other best in Gloaming Stakes betting this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival are Chris Waller’s market mover High Mist ($3.90) who scratched out of the Stan Fox in favour of this longer-distance run and the unbeaten Ming Dynasty Quality winner Swear ($4.40).
So can Prized Icon return to winning form or is there an upset Gloaming Stakes result on the card?
1st
#2 Swear ($4.40)
There are better-tried in the race, but tipping the Hawkes Racing-trained Redoute’s Choice colt to remain unbeaten with a third win from as many career starts. He was last seen saluting in the wet at Randwick first-up over a similar field in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty (1400m) and his strong effort there should see him handle the extra metres second-up without a worry. Has the most improvement.
2nd
#3 High Mist ($3.90)
The same quinella as in the Ming Dynasty can repeat here with Waller’s runner-up right in the mix again. He has had an extra run so is on the shorter back-up having won over 1600m as the odds-on favourite in a Benchmark 67 on September 14 at Warwick Farm. This is his first run over further than a mile, but the metres should suit and he is rock hard fit.
3rd
#5 Veladero ($9.50)
Waller’s other runner and his trainer has plenty of positives to say about the Medaglia D’Oro colt who comes off back-to-back Sydney wins. The latest was also over the Warwick Farm mile last week under 58.5kg. Drops back to 56.5kg for this and is doing lots right ahead of his maiden Black-Type test.
