A total of 16 three-year-old staying types make up the early entries for this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m), the set weights clash one of five Group races on the Golden Pendant Day line-up.
Heading the Gloaming Stakes ballot is the James Cummings-trained More Than Ready colt Prized Icon, best known for his Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) win at Randwick in mid-April as a juvenile.
He has had two unplaced runs this time in and is out to atone for his last when sixth in the wet behind Hartnell as the beaten favourite in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) on September 3.
Early pre-field Gloaming Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have Prized Icon as the equal $4.60 favourite to make up for that disappointing effort against easier class over more metres on a hopefully firmer track this weekend.
The other $4.60 chance in futures Gloaming Stakes betting markets on the nominated gallopers is the in-form High Mist from the star Sydney stables of Chris Waller.
A High Chaparral colt, High Mist has run top two in his three latest starts including his second to Swear in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) two back.
He won his next start over 1600m on September 14 at Warwick Farm carrying 59.5kg and is better weighted on 56.5kg this weekend.
Waller also has High Mist nominated for a shorter run at Rosehill on Saturday in the $200,000 Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m), a race the trainer won last spring with subsequent Caulfield Guineas champion Press Statement.
Along with High Mist in the Gloaming Stakes, Waller has four other nominated three-year-olds including Medaglia D’Oro colt Veladero who comes off back-to-back wins in easier company.
The other most notable dual Stan Fox Stakes – Gloaming Stakes nominee is the Team Hawkes-trained Ming Dynasty winner Swear who is undefeated with two wins from as many career starts to date.
Godolphin head trainer John O’Shea has three Gloaming Stakes entries this season with Domesday gelding Kent, Bernardini colt Retaliation and last start Kembla Grange winning Street Cry colt Honeywine.
Two fillies are nominated to possibly take on the boys in this year’s Gloaming Stakes with the Anthony Cummings-trained Moqueen who remains a maiden after seven career runs and stakes-placed Lasqueti Spirit for Lee Curtis.
Other notable nominees include the progressive Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained son of Snitzel Coonawarra and John Sargent’s Al Maher gelding Oculist coming off back-to-back wins in non-stakes’ company.
