Set to run as Randwick Race 8 at 4:30pm (AEST) as the penultimate event on the nine-race Chelmsford Stakes Day card, this year’s $175,000 Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) features a final field of 11 hopefuls.
Jumping from gate one with Kerrin McEvoy aboard on the 58kg top weight in the set weights plus penalties clash, Hard Spun four-year-old Le Romain chases his first win since taking out the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 5.
He ran second first-up to Tycoon Tara at the track in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) a fortnight back and now boasts two wins and two seconds at the Randwick course.
Proven at a mile he is sure to appreciate the extra distance of Saturday’s race, but does give the weight away to some class rivals including two for Godolphin and John O’Shea.
O’Shea has accepted for stablemates Hauraki and It’s Somewhat who both run first-up from barriers seven and six respectively.
James McDonald partners Reset five-year-old Hauraki, the smart gelding last seen running second to Our Ivanhowe in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) in Brisbane back on May 21.
Hauraki is also a multiple Group 1 placegetter in Sydney.
He was runner-up to Mongolian Khan in last year’s Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m), third to Winx in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) this February and also second to The United States at Rosehill in March’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).
It’s Somewhat is also lining-up for the first time since a brave Doomben Cup performance, the now six-year-old son of Dynaformer having finished third in the winter showdown.
Also returning to racing on Saturday in the Tramway is the Patrick Webster-trained Happy Clapper who his regular jockey Brenton Avdulla rides from barrier two.
Teofilo gelding Happy Clapper finished off his autumn preparation in Sydney in flying form crossing second to Chris Waller’s superstar mare Winx in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) before a third to Lucia Valentina in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
He is a three-time winner from seven starts at Randwick Racecourse, his latest win being over Tinto in December last year in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m).
Boasting the fitness edge meanwhile are a host of other runners including the Team Hawkes-trained Messene coming off a fourth in the Show County, the Lindsay Park-trained Aurie’s Star Handicap runner-up in Flemington Dibayani and Heavens Above.
Tim Martin’s Street Cry mare Heavens Above ran second to Azkadellia in April’s Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) before her first-up fourth when only one and a half-lengths off the winner in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) on August 20.
She jumps from barrier three this weekend with Jason Collett coming on for the ride and drops from 59kg last start to Saturday’s 54kg light weight.
