Lindsay Park’s lightly-raced colt Derryn has opened narrow favourite to post his first black-type win in the Up And Coming Stakes 2016 at Royal Randwick this weekend.

The son of Hinchinbrook is one of nine three-year-olds in the mix for Randwick Race 4 on the Warwick Stakes Day card in Sydney – the $125,000 Group 3 Primo Smallgoods Up And Coming Stakes (1300m).
Drawn in barrier seven with Tim Clark booked for the ride, Derryn has his first non-Melbourne start in the race on the back of a Caulfield win over 1000m from late July.
On debut he ran sixth when only 1.5 lengths off the winner Selenia in the Listed Festival Stakes (1000m) at Flemington before breaking his maiden status in the two-years-old handicap from a wide barrier (12 of 12) last start.
Despite not having raced in Sydney or over 1000m, the bookies are taking no chances with the progressive galloper and have Derryn leading the Up And Coming Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.40.
Two youngsters follow closely in the markets with the super-consistent Thronum ($4) and market mover Divine Prophet ($4.40).
James McDonald takes over for Tommy Berry in the saddle of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Snitzel colt Thronum who has won three of his four stars to date.
His latest was on August 6 at Randwick on a Heavy (10) track where he showed off his potential to see out more distance with a win in the Listed The Rosebud (1200m).
He carted 58kg to victory that day and will appreciate the drop back to 55.5kg in Saturday’s quality handicap showdown.
Divine Prophet gets in on 55kg and Berry rides the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Choisir colt from the outside barrier (9) first-up.
The horse was last seen running a close third behind Prized Icon in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at the track in mid-April and has since trialled twice including a nice third to Impending over 1000m at Warwick Farm on August 12.
A further two hopes are under $10 in the odds with Team Snowden’s runner Taj Mahal ($7) in barrier four and the returning Champagne Stakes winner Prized Icon ($9) one on his inside in gate three.
Peter & Paul Snowden opted not to run 2016 Golden Rose-bound Mediterranean in the race, saving him instead for Saturday week’s Run To The Rose.
They still have a genuine hope lining-up in Taj Mahal, Kerrin McEvoy riding the More Than Ready colt first-up after an April 6 win over the distance (1300m) at Warwick Farm back in April.
Prized Icon meanwhile has the class but gives the weight away with the James Cummings-trained colt, also a son of More Than Ready, carrying a hefty 61kg.
Hugh Bowman, who rode Taj Mahal for his autumn win last time out, jumps on Prized Icon here after Glyn Schofield partnered him for the Group 1 win.
Bowman previously rode Prized Icon for his first Randwick victory in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m), which the then two-year-old won by an easy two lengths.
