The set weights plus penalties $150,000 Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) is one of the meeting’s key acts attracted 13 three-year-olds at early entry stage, Racing Victoria extending nominations until 10:00am (AEST) on Tuesday morning.
Of the current nominees three hail from the stables of David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig who have entered Dam Ready, Highland Beat and Valliano.
More Than Ready gelding Dam Ready races for the first time since his fourth as the beaten favourite in Adelaide’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at Morphettville in mid-May.
He has had one previous start at Caulfield when fourth on debut to subsequent Blue Diamond Stakes winner Extreme choice in February’s Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m), which he followed with a 1000m win at Moonee Valley.
Stablemate Highland Beat finished second in the Chairman’s Stakes, but was unplaced when 10th in the Group 1 Blue Diamond back at the track next time out.
He is a winner of two of his nine starts to date, the well-tried Exceed And Excel colt having his first run since a second to Oregon’s Day in the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on April 30.
Lindsay Park’s third hopeful Valliano meanwhile is a last start Caulfield winner over 1200m from mid-April, giving him a strong record at the track (4-2-0-1) he runs first-up over on Saturday.
The headline Vain Stakes entry though is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Russian Revolution who has won both of his career starts to date.
The Snitzel colt is a dual winner in Sydney and also won a Randwick trial on July 29 ahead of his Melbourne debut this weekend, the Vain Stakes run confirmed over a clash with his star stablemate Capitalist in Sydney’s Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) on Saturday.

Also unbeaten with two wins from as many starts heading into the Vain Stakes is the Darren Weir-trained Artie Dee Two, the colt’s latest win being over 1200m at Moonee Valley on June 18.
