2016 Lightning Stakes Odds and Betting Preview

Sixteen sprinters will line up for the Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville on Saturday, and the depth of talent has led to betting markets for the feature race representing particularly good value to punters.

Sword Of Light has not been seen at the races since finishing mid-field in the Listed Festival Of Racing 1000 (1000m) on March 5th, but remains outright $4.60 favourite in 2016 Lightning Stakes betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au.

Immediately stamping herself as one to watch with a dominant win in the NJ20 Cricket Jan Maiden (1000m) in December, Sword Of Light returned in late January for success in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview F (1000m).

Failing to produce much when tenth in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude F (1100m) in what was her only other start prior to the Festival Of Racing 1000, the New Approach filly may require some luck in running on Saturday from barrier 10 but will carry only 52kgs as a two-year-old filly.

Neither Cool Snitzel nor Showpero have heralded much interest in 2016 Lightning Stakes betting markets so far, but the pair remain locked on the second line at $5 quotes.

Cool Snitzel began her racing career under the guidance of Peter Moody, but will be contesting his first race for Darren Weir on Saturday after transferring following the former’s retirement.

Claiming three wins from only five career starts so far, the Snitzel filly has not been seen at the races since finishing a credible fourth in the Frank O’Brien BM78 (1200m) on Boxing Day.

Cool Snitzel could very well receive the run of the race in the Lightning Stakes from the ideal barrier 3, and will be partnered by in-form hoop John Allen.

Showpero undoubtedly faces the biggest test of her short racing career to date in the Lightning Stakes, but is yet to taste anything but success.

Trialling well in the lead-up to her competitive debut, Showpero savaged the line for a near-four length win in the Mercedes-Benz Adelaide Handicap (1000m) before repeating the dose, this time by two lengths in the Schweppes Handicap (1000m) last time out on July 9th.

Fellow two-year-old Power Trip is more than worth consideration for a bet at current Lightning Stakes odds of $8, while Viddora currently figures as clear $13 market mover, having opened at a quote of $16.
