2016 Winter Cup Betting Tips

The ATC Winter Cup 2016 is one of two quality stakes races on the Sydney race card at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, betting tips for the staying clash detailed below.

Just seven runners line-up in this year’s $100,000 Listed ATC Winter Cup (2400m), the handicap clash due to jump as Race 4 at 1:10pm (AEST) on the Civic Stakes Day card.

Of the runners in the mix the short-priced favourite in Winter Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.30 to win is the Hawkes Racing-trained Tucanchoo.

Christian Reith has the ride on the in-form Pentire six-year-old who won back-to-back races at Sandown (1600m) and Randwick (2000m) earlier in the winter before his close second to Index Linked in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) last Saturday at Eagle Farm.

He heads to Rosehill for the first time on Saturday and sees the 2400m for just the second time, but was narrowly beaten last time out and is well-weighted on the 54kg minimum again here on the short back-up.

Of his six rivals a further four are also under $10 in the Winter Cup odds however making it a close affair betting-wise.

So will Tucanchoo score for the punters or will the Winter Cup winner be a longer-priced hope such as the Chris Waller-trained Lonhro six-year-old Loophole ($5.50) or David Payne’s in-form runner Foreign Prince ($4) who shoots for his third win on the trot?

Our 2016 Winter Cup Trifecta Tip is #4 Tucanchoo from #5 Jiayuguan and #3 Loophole

1st

#4 Tucanchoo ($2.30)

Deserving favourite looks hard to beat in a small field even on the seven day turnaround. Lead-up form is very hard to fault and has saluted up to 2200m. Yet to get the 2400m, but looks like he’ll handle the distance here after the close effort in tougher Group 3 company in Brisbane last weekend. Well-weighted on just 54kg again and the likely Slow-rated course will suit.

2nd

#5 Jiayuguan ($8)

Early market mover, John Thompson’s smart Teofilo mare comes off a well-beaten fourth by fellow Saturday rival Foreign Prince over 2000m at the track on June 18, but she’ll thrive getting up to 2400m. While the distance is a query for a number of these, she’s a mile and a half specialist (6-3-1-0) and on 54kg from the inside alley is every chance to improve notably on her recent form.

3rd

#3 Loophole ($5.50)

Of the two Waller runners this son of Lonhro looks a livewire chance after two thirds behind Foreign Prince over 1800m and 2000m at the track last month. He’s yet to get out over 2400m, but has been racing like he wants the distance and this will be the test. Carried 57kg last time out and drops to 54.5kg, so another advantage that should see him turn the tables on his last start conqueror.
