Kiwi raider Volkstok’n’Barrell remains outright $2.60 favourite in 2016 Eagle Farm Cup betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Maurus ($3.40), Mighty Lucky and Puccini; currently sharing the third line at generous $6 quotes.
Will Volkstok’n’Barrell justify his resounding favouritism and return to winning form in the Eagle Farm Cup, or will one of his many talented rivals post an upset?
1st
Mighty Lucky ($6)
Mighty Lucky delivered a classy field a comfortable defeat in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m) last weekend, is drawn ideally in barrier 2 and should perform to a high standard with only one week between races. Resuming this time for a classy win in the talent-rich Royal Randwick 100 (1400m), the Casino Prince gelding progressed to second in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) before running a luckless sixth in the Listed Scone Cup (1600m) leading into his most recent triumph. Tegan Harrison takes the ride in place of regular hoop Chris O’Brien who is out through suspension, and the horse should relish a step-up to 2200m.
2nd
Maurus ($3.40)
Maurus has already heralded plenty of interest in 2016 Eagle Farm Cup betting markets and is a leading chance of a first three finish this weekend. A strong and consistent performer for trainer David Vandyke, the Medicean gelding ran third in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) on March 5th; progressing to success in the Windsor Management Insurance Brokers Handicap (2200m) at Doomben before running a credible fifth in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) a fortnight ago. Maurus should prove tough to beat from barrier 5, with Blake Shinn in the saddle.
3rd
Col ‘n’ Lil ($31)
Talented local Col ‘n’ Lil was one of the 2015 Brisbane Winter Carnival standouts, carries winning form into Saturday’s Group 2 and is simply over the Eagle Farm Cup odds at her current quote. Finishing second in each of the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) and Group 2 The Roses (2000m) through a strong three-year-old campaign, the Bradbury’s Luck mare finished fifth in the Ara Fire BM85 (1630m) on April 30th; progressing to second in the City Of Gold Coast BM80 (1800m) before taking out the Herbert Smith Freehills BM85 (2000m) on May 21st.
