Jumping from the gates well, jockey Zac Purton allowed Kamacite to stride forward and immediately take up the pace in the Queensland Day Stakes; ensuring the race would be run at a good tempo from the outset.

Rounding onto the final straight with a clear racing line, the Northern Meteor colt immediately responded when asked for an extra effort and kicked comfortably ahead; sustaining a strong-enough sprint to withstand a late charge from a fast-finishing Mogador.

Purton delivered a typically smart performance aboard Kamacite to win the Queensland Day Stakes and revealed the horse travelled like the winner from the outset.

“He always travelled like the winner in the run and he gave me a nice little kick at the top of the straight,” Purton said.

“The hard track started to pull him up towards the line, but he had a good break and he was great today.

“He loves himself, he’s colty and has a bit of a play, but you don’t mind that when they’re winning.”

Kamacite is undefeated since transferring to the care of Tony Gollan, and the leading Queensland trainer revealed he may have booked himself a place in the Listed Hinkler Handicap (1200m) field amongst open company on Stradbroke Handicap Day in a fortnight.

“Funnily enough, Mogador beat him in a maiden at Rosehill in his first start,” Gollan said.

“It’s good to get him up into my stable up here and he’s done a great job here today.

“He was obviously a double-figure odds chance in the markets and had the one alley and I just said to Zac to be nice and positive out, he always relaxes and he just settled, went so steady in front and gave himself every chance to have a good kick.

“He’s a big, strong boy so we always thought a six day back up wouldn’t be a problem.

“I’m not sure what his range is but there is a 1200m against the older horses on Stradbroke Day, whether we have a look at that on the minimum weight or not, I’m not sure.”
