2016 Doomben 10,000 Results: Music Magnate Claims Upset Win

Music Magnate has caused a huge boilover in Brisbane this afternoon; producing a perfectly-timed sprint in the final straight to take out the featured Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m).

Jumping from the gates well, jockey Kerrin McEvoy elected to settle Music Magnate of the early pace of Two Blue, Fell Swoop and Hooked, who flew the barriers and set a break-neck pace for the field of nine; at one stage pulled seven lengths ahead.

Appearing well out of contention upon arriving at the final straight, McEvoy pulled the Written Tycoon gelding wide before asking for an extra effort; flying home late alongside race favourite Azkadellia to deliver Bjorn Baker his first Group 1 title as a solo trainer.

McEvoy delivered a gem of a ride aboard Music Magnate to win the Doomben 10,000, and said he was impressed by the class and ability displayed by the tough gelding following an early check.

“As Bjorn said before the race this was going to be a game of chess on horseback, but it unfolded completely different to how I thought it would,” McEvoy said after crossing the line.

“I thought I would be closer to the lead, but I got quite a bad check about 100m after the start; the inside horses came out and I just lost a bit of momentum.

“I was able to tuck back into a nice position and I haven’t been in a race over 1400m or 1350m where they’ve gone that quick, and he was able to just build around the 400m and he was really strong late.

“Bjorn’s done a really great job with him, so well done to him and his team.”

Baker was on hand for Music Magnate’s shock win in the Doomben 10,000 and revealed he will considering entering the gelding in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm in a fortnight.

“Queensland has been very kind to me and I’ve got a great team back home,” Baker said.

“He’s had one or two issues, he’s taken time and as a two-year-old he didn’t show me much, but he’s continue to improve. I love the Written Tycoons.

“We decided to miss most of the autumn, we had one crack at the Hall Mark and that was a phenomenal effort, then he had a month between runs going to Scone. I thought he was very well set up to run a good effort here today.

“We might have to look at the Stradbroke.”
