Artlee Tops 2016 BRC Sprint Betting Odds

Despite racing on successive Saturdays the Todd Willan-trained Artlee has opened dominant favourite in BRC Sprint 2016 betting at Doomben Racecourse this Saturday in Queensland.

The five-year-old Excellent Art gelding raced at the track last weekend in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) finishing 2.3 lengths off the Stradbroke Handicap-bound winner Malaguerra.

That followed on from Artlee’s third to Fell Swoop in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m), also run at Doomben where he returns for the third time dropping back in class for the $125,000 Group 3 Darley BRC Sprint (1350m).

One of the key acts on Doomben Cup Day, this year’s BRC Sprint runs as Race 5 at 2:41pm (AEST) on Saturday afternoon and features a final field of 13.

Artlee heads BRC Sprint odds at Ladbrokes.com.au after coming up trumps in barrier three and pays $2.90 to atone for his unplaced BTC Cup run on the quick back-up with Michael Cahill continuing his association.

There are four other hopes in BRC Sprint betting under $10 for the win this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including $6 second pick Religify coming off four top two runs.

Jumping one on the outside of the favourite from a good gate four draw with one of Sydney’s best jockeys James McDonald booked for the ride, the consistent Chris Waller-trained Choisir five-year-old makes his Brisbane debut in the Group 3.

He comes off a win over the distance (1350m) at Rosehill a fortnight ago carrying 60kg, and while stepping up in class will relish the drop back to just 54.5kg under the quality handicap conditions of the BRC Sprint.

Following closely in the markets are last-start winners Coolring ($7) and Charmed Harmony ($7.50) drawn in barriers eight and 11 respectively.

Jeff Lloyd stays aboard the Bjorn Baker-trained Sebring grey Coolring whose lead-up run produced a good win from a wide gate, 13 of 16, in the Listed Primer Minister’s Cup (1400m) on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago.

He’s drawn better for this weekend, his first run at Doomben, but rises from 54.5kg to 56kg as he chases back-to-back Black-Type victories.

Charmed Harmony meanwhile heads the BRC Sprint weights carrying 59kg, the John Sadler-trained Hussonet six-year-old coming off a win with the same kilos at Caulfield over 1400m from late April.

That followed on from a second, also at Caulfield over the 1400m, in March when narrowly beaten by Saturday’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) favourite in Adelaide Black Heart Bart in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m).

The last of the single figure chances for the BRC Sprint on Saturday at an easing $9 is the rails-drawn Bachman from the Sydney stables of Gerald Ryan.

Regular rider Kerrin McEvoy stays on the All American four-year-old who is out to improve on some recently unlucky runs including an eighth in Randwick’s Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) in mid-April when beaten under two lengths.

Bachman has previous good form in Queensland from last winter having finished second in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) as a three-year-old, and also won the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) at the gold Coast on Boxing Day.
