Due to run as the Gold Coast Race 6 at 3:00pm (AEST) for A.D. Hollindale Stakes Day, this year’s $100,000 Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m) features a full field of 16.
Sitting top of the Prime Minister’s Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the rails-drawn Worthy Cause at $3.90, apprentice Luke Dittman retaining the ride on the John Zielke-trained stallion second-up.
Last time out he was runner-up to Hopfgarten in a Black-Type at his home Sunshine Coast track on April 23, his first run since the fourth to Group 1 winning mare Tinto in the Magic Millions Trophy.
Returning to the Gold Coast the four-year-old son of Choisir shoots for his second win from four Gold Coast runs, and is proven in better company having finished a nice third at Sandown in November’s Gorup 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m).
The step up to 1400m is ideal second-up as he boasts a great record over the distance of three wins and a second from five starts and he drops from 58kg to 57kg.
Next best in Prime Minister’s Cup betting this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival at $4.40 is the 59kg top weight and Worthy Cause’s last start conqueror Hopfgarten from the Brisbane stables of Robert Heathcote.
The Mossman five-year-old goes up from 58.5kg that run and is yet to finish in the money at the Gold Coast, but the bookies are still taking no chances.
Other single figure hopes include the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Snippets Land ($6) in gate three on 55.5kg, early market mover Jumbo Prince ($7.50) to be ridden by James McDonald and the widely-drawn Sebring grey Coolring ($8).
So can Worthy Cause salute for the punters or should you tip a galloper at longer odds such as the Ciaron Maher-trained Group 1 performer Akavoroun ($11) or the in-form Pillar Of Creation ($19) coming off a Weetwood Handicap third at Toowoomba?
1st
#2 Worthy Cause ($3.90)
Sticking with the favourite who still gets in okay in the weights and should get a gun run from gate one. He was only just off the winner first up and if he improves off that can turn the tables on Hopfgarten. This is his pet distance proven by the record (5-3-1-0), he’s a smart four-year-old with plenty of promise, has form around some very nice types including Turn Me Loose from the spring in Melbourne and is ticking plenty of boxes.
2nd
#5 Pillar Of Creation ($19)
The odds on offer for this Tony Sears-trained God’s Own six-year-old look juicy. He was third and beaten only 0.6 lengths at his home Toowoomba track on April 16 in the Weetwood, and drops from 57kg to 55kg here. Midfield draw suits and he is in great form not having finished out of the money in his past three starts around Queensland. Not sure if the Gold Coast is the right track, but everything else stacks up for the 42-start veteran.
3rd
#3 Snippets Land ($6.50)
Sydney raider is drawn a treat in gate three for his first run since the close fourth when under a length off Havana Cooler in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m in late March. Before that he was runner-up only a nose off the winner over the Doomben mile and at the Gold Coast he has had one run for a third back in January of 2014.
