2016 Sydney Cup Odds Update

With no scratchings from the original 11 stayers in the Sydney Cup 2016 field at Royal Randwick this afternoon on Day 2 of ‘The Championships’, Chris Waller’s dynamite trio continue to dominate the betting for the two mile classic.

Running as Randwick Race 7 on Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day, this year’s $2 million Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) looks Waller’s for the taking.

The master horseman prepared the quinella last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival and his favourite in Sydney Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for the victory this year is last weekend’s Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) winner Libran.

Libran has eased out from $2.90 to $3.80 but is still the shortest priced of the Sydney Cup hopefuls on the quick seven day back-up.

The Offer (2014) was the last horse to complete the Chairman’s Handicap – Sydney Cup double Libran shoots for this afternoon, Waller’s in-form import dropping from 58kg last Saturday to an advantageous 53kg today with Brenton Avdulla riding from barrier three.

Following in the Sydney Cup odds are the two best past the post in last year’s Sydney Cup, runner-up Who Shot Thebarman ($4) just shorter than the reigning champion Grand Marshal ($4.20) who is looking to go back-to-back for the first time since Tie The Knot (1998-99).

The duo jump from barriers five and six respectively with seven-year-old Who Shot Thebarman carrying the 57kg top weight while Grand Marshal gets in on 55kg with James McDonald in the saddle.

Money has also started to come for an upset Sydney Cup result with two notable market movers – Almoonqith backed in from $11 to $8 and Gallante well ed in from $15 to $9.

Gallante is the big Sydney Cup market mover backed in from $15 to $9 to upset Waller’s trio in the two mile feature

Jumping from barrier 10 with the autumn’s in-form jockey Hugh Bowman booked for the ride, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Dynaformer six-year-old Almoonqith is proven over the distance having won the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) last November.

He has had three runs this time in, the latest a sixth to Preferment in the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) from March 26, that also produces Who Shot Thebarman (2nd) and Grand Marshal (3rd).

Gallante represents prolific owner Lloyd Williams, the Robert Hickmott-trained Montjeu five-year-old last seen running third to Libran on March 9 in the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m).

The big market drifter meanwhile out from $8 to $15 is the Gai Waterhouse-trained French import Café Society who gets in on the 51kg minimum, dropping back three kilos from the weight he carried to a close third when just a quarter-length off Libran in last weekend’s Chairman’s.
