winning mare Politeness will take on the boys first-up having been accepted for the Rubiton Stakes 2016 this weekend at Caulfield Racecourse.
One of the key races on the CF Orr Stakes Day card, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Schweppes Rubiton Stakes (1100m) is set to run as Caulfield Race 5 at 3:30pm (AEDT) on Saturday and features a final field of 11 sprinters.
Among the mix and drawn nicely in barrier four for jockey Dwayne Dunn is five-year-old Street Sense mare Politeness whose biggest win to date was in Flemington’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) on Derby Day.
Her last run was a second to Turn Me Loose, who also returns at Caulfield on Saturday in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) on November 7.
She has had one lead-up trial at Cranbourne on Monday and finished a good fourth ahead of her shot at a fourth first-up win from eight starts.
The 1100m of the Rubiton might be a little sharp for the $1 million earner however as she progresses towards a Sydney run at Randwick on April 2 in the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
The heaviest weighted runner in the set weights plus penalties event on Saturday carrying 58.5kg is the Phillip Stokes-trained Éclair Choice.
Jumping from a gun gate two draw with Dom Tourneur over for the ride, the returning Adelaide raider won back-to-back Group 2 races last October to see out his spring prep.
A four-year-old son of California Dane, Éclair Choice has had one previous Caulfield run for a win in the Caulfield Sprint (1000m) on October 17 and won a trial at home at the start of the month ahead of his return.
Drawn in gate five is fellow four-year-old Husson Eagle, the gelding having won the Magic Millions Sprint (1100m) at the Gold Coast on January 9.
Also fit and looking to fire in the Rubiton Stakes this Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival is the Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Niello six-year-old Tried And Tired coming off back-to-back seconds in Melbourne.
Two back on January 16 he was second to Tudor in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes (1400m) at Flemington before a second again this time to Mighty Like in Caulfield’s Listed Barton Stakes (1400m) on Australia Day.
He drops in distance this weekend, but is yet to win over less than 1200m.
Drawn the outside barrier is the Brett Cavanough-trained The Monstar coming off a fourth to Headwater in the Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington late last month, while Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra saddle-up the in-form Heatherly in barrier three.
The three-year-old Lonhro filly is up against a field of older rivals this weekend earning her shot at the Rubiton Stakes trophy after a Moonee Valley win on January 2 and a Flemington win over 1100m on January 30.
