2016 Kevin Hayes Stakes Field Features Risque

The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained New Zealand import Risque will kick off her racing career down under when she returns in the Kevin Hayes Stakes 2016 field at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday.

A major act on the CF Orr Stakes Day card, which features eight black-type races, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) is due to jump as Caulfield Race 2 at 2:00pm (AEDT).

There are nine three-year-old fillies in the mix including former Kiwi, Darci Brahma three-year-old Risque.

Now prepared by the Lindsay Park training duo of Hayes & Dabernig, Risque has won three of her six career starts to date including the Group 1 NZ Thousand Guineas (1600m) last November.

She is nominated for a host of autumn majors including the $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) against the boys at Flemington on March 5 and debuts down under from barrier two with Damian Lane in the saddle on Saturday.

Drawn one on her inside with the rails run from gate one is the Robert Kingston-trained Weather The Storm.

A perennial placegetter, the Mutawaajid filly has had three runs for three seconds to date and was last seen going down as the odds-on favourite over 1000m at Mornington on February 5.

Team Hawkes are represented by Fastnet Rock filly Cana who won back-to-back races last time in to kick off her career before a first-up sixth to Cannyescent at Randwick last time out.

She will appreciate a firmer Melbourne track this weekend and could prove the one to beat if she can get into the right position from her barrier eight draw with Glen Boss aboard.

In barrier three is the John Thompson-trained daughter of Mossman Mossin’ Around who has run top three in her three career runs so far.

She’s a Canterbury winner over this distance and was last seen crossing just a length away second to Hellbent down the Flemington straight in the lucrative $250,000 Inglis Dash (1100m) in mid-January.

One of the best tried in the mix is the John O’Shea-trained Calavertie, the Lonhro filly drawn the outside alley this weekend second-up.

She is a black-type winner at Moonee Valley, Group 2 performed and placed in Group 3 company at Randwick from last autumn.

Her first-up run was also at Moonee valley over 1200m on January 23 where she ran sixth to Choose, an effort she’s looking to lift from as she takes on a field of her own kind here.

Last time out during the Melbourne Cup Carnival the Robbie Laing-trained The Grey Flash was a $61 outsider in betting for the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) running sixth to Jameka, but this is an easier field over a more suitable distance.

Other notable hopes include recent Geelong winner Make Her Own Whey who comes off a third to Heatherly at Flemington from January 30 and the Colin Little-trained Safariann who ran fifth in the same race beaten under three lengths.
