Chris Waller’s star mare Winx is the headline 2016 Doncaster Mile nomination taken by Racing NSW this week ahead of the feature race on Day 1 of The Championships at Royal Randwick in April.

There are four elite level features on the Doncaster Mile Day card on Saturday April 1 including the $3 million Group 1 The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) that attracted 163 nominations.
Up from 139 last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, this season’s Doncaster Mile nominations feature a bumper 30 entries from the race’s leading trainer Waller.
Waller has won six of the past eight editions of the Doncaster Mile Handicap including the past three years on the trot with Sacred Falls (2013 & 2014) and Kermadec (2015).
His top entry in 2016 to extend the winning streak is Cox Plate winning mare Winx who is more likely to target the following Saturday’s Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
The bookmakers are keeping the Street Cry four-year-old safe in Doncaster Mile betting however, Winx leading the all-in markets as she prepares to kick off her campaign in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) in Sydney this Saturday.
The other shortest-priced of the Waller contingent in futures Doncaster Mile odds this year is Press Statement.
The dual Group 1 winning Hinchinbrook colt was last seen taking out the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne last October and also runs first-up this weekend having been nominated for a number of races across Sydney and Melbourne.
Three-year-olds have dominated the Doncaster Mile results over the past 30 years including two winners for Waller in the past three years.
Waller’s other headline 2016 Doncaster Mile hopefuls include the defending champion Kermadec and four-year-old Not A Single Doubt stallion Good Project who won Perth’s Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) back in November.
Following Winx and Press Statement in early Doncaster betting meanwhile is Bow Creek for John O’Shea and powerhouse racing operation Godolphin.
O’Shea boasts two Doncaster Mile wins with Private Steer (2004) and Racing To Win (2006) and imported Shamardal five-year-old Bow Creek is one of 10 nominations for the stable this year.
His other headline entries include Mackinnon Stakes third placegetter Contributer who won last autumn’s Chipping Norton Stakes – Ranvet Stakes double and Crown Oaks third placegetter Ambience.
Ambience, if accepted, will be out to become the first three-year-old filly to take out the Doncaster Mile since the great Sunline (1999).
Other noteworthy fillies in the mix include the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Thousand Guineas winner Stay With Me, last year’s Golden Slipper runner-up English, the Peter Moody-trained daughter of Savabeel Pasadena Girl and Perfect Reflection.
More Than Ready three-year-old Perfect Reflection is early favourite to beat home the boys in the $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington in early March for new trainer Darren Weir.
Previously prepared in Perth the undefeated filly has won all five of her career starts to date including the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in December.
Last spring’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer Weir’s other headline Doncaster Mile entries include Toorak Handicap champ Lucky Hussler, Magic Millions Guineas winning Flying Spur colt Mahuta and Stratum Star won took out the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes last September.
Murray Baker’s Emirates Stakes winner from the spring Turn Me Loose runs first-up this weekend in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and is another headline Doncaster Mile entry.
He has also been entered for the lucrative Queen Elizabeth Stakes on April 9.
The 2016 Doncaster Mile first acceptances are taken at 12pm (AEDT) on Tuesday March 8 and the final field is out on Tuesday March 29, 2016.
