Also ed as the William Hill Sprint Series Final, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Cape Grim Beef Steaks (1200m) closes the Caulfield Guineas Day card on the weekend jumping at 6:15pm (AEST) as Race 10.
There are 11 older mares in the field including Smerdon’s five-year-old daughter of Street Sense who returned to form first-up on September 19 with her win in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) from barrier 13 of 14.
Mark Zahra retains the ride this weekend on Politeness who is again drawn wide with gate 10 of 11 to overcome.
The only other last start winning mare in the mix is then the Nigel Blackiston-trained Exclusive Lass who Kerrin McEvoy rides from gate nine on 55kg under the set weights plus penalties conditions of the sprint showdown.
An in-form four-year-old daughter of Nicconi, Exclusive Lass has run top three in all three of her runs this time in including a 1200m win at Moonee Valley by an impressive three lengths on September 25 in a mares-only Benchmark 70.

A winner of three straight last spring – summer campaign including the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie back in January, In Style has had just the one run since when 10th in the Group 1 Telegraph Stakes (1200m) and returns to racing in her Australian debut on Saturday.
Also first-up in the Cape Grim Beef Steaks field this spring are Peter Moody’s rails-drawn Bring Me The Maid and Ygritte in gate five for Darren Weir.
Glen Boss has the ride on Sebring four-year-old Bring Me The Maid who hasn’t raced since a seventh to Hazard in Brisbane’s Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) back in early June.
It has been a long time between drinks for her too with her last win being in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) back in August last year.
Snitzel mare Ygritte is another returning four-year-old, the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) winner from April out to atone for a last start 13th to Loved Up in the Scone Inglis Guineas back in mid-May.
Other notable mares in the mix include the Michael Kent-trained Danestroem who has a solid record at this track and distance (5-2-1-0) and Catch That Cat who is back up to her pet distance (4-2-1-1).
