Jumping from the gates well, jockey Brenton Avdulla pressed Tremec forward and settled in prime position on the heels of early leader Queenstown, who set a reasonable tempo away from the barriers and over the back straight.

Settling into a good rhythm and receiving an ideal run in transit, the Zabeel gelding pulled out of the slipstream and ed Queenstown at the fore of the pack with around 600m to run; kicking particularly well in the final straight to hit the line more than a length in the clear of Sir John Hawkwood; Grand Marshal running on for third.

Avdulla delivered a perfectly-timed run on Tremec in the 2015 Chairman’s Handicap and credited the horse’s superior wet track abilities with the win.

“We came here today and I didn’t have too much on paper but I was going through the replays this morning and the positive I found with this horse was the last two times he’s run in this race he’s won and run second,” Avdulla said.

“He was the best wet-tracker in the race and I just rode him accordingly.

“I had a soft run through and Timmy (Clark, Queenstown) rolled nicely and I was happy to drag off him the whole way round.

“At the top of the straight I was going well and halfway up the straight I was going strong too, so I knew he’d keep going for me.

John (Thompson) said he was confident he’d run well, and he did.”

Trainer John Thompson was pleased with Tremec’s performance in the 2015 Chairman’s Handicap, and revealed a trip north to contest the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2200m) on June sixth may come to fruition should he be allocated a heavy weight for the Sydney Cup (3200m) next weekend.

“He’s tricky, he has a mind of his own but coming back to his home track, a bit of give in the ground there was a few things in his favour,” Thompson said.

“He’s a horse that’s coming right at the right time.

“We’ll just let the dust settle and have a look see at that (Sydney Cup) and we might just go to the Brisbane Cup but we’ll worry about today.”
