There are two scratchings from this year’s $600,000 Group 1 Girvan Waugh Randwick Guineas (1600m) field that jumps as Randwick Race 7 at 3:30pm (AEDT) this afternoon in Sydney.
On Wednesday not long after a small eight-starter field was released, Chris Waller withdrew Kermadec from the race in order for the galloper to run in Melbourne’s $500,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington instead.
Then on Friday morning trainer Paul Messara was forced to scratch his big name hope in the race, Scissor Kick, with the Golden Rose runner-up suffering from an elevated temperature.
Just six three-year-olds remain in the mix then with the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Caulfield Guineas winner Shooting To Win battling for top spot in the Randwick Guineas betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au with Hallowed Crown.
This morning both smart runners were at $2.80 to win, but a tickle of money has come in for Team Snowden’s consistent Northern Meteor colt Shooting To Win who has firmed into $2.70 to become a dual Guineas winner.
He won the group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne to cap off a stellar spring last time in that also included a third to Hallowed Crown in Sydney’s Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in September.
Shooting To Win resumed at Rosehill on February 21 and will be improving second-up off a close second when under half a length behind Hallowed Crown in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m).
Last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival the Peter Moody-trained Dissident completed the Hobartville Stakes – Randwick Guineas double, a feat Hallowed Crown looks to repeat this weekend.
The super consistent Street Sense colt, winner of the Golden Rose, has the rails run today from barrier one with his Hobartville Stakes winning jockey Hugh Bowman retaining his association.
While Shooting To Win is proven over the mile, Hallowed Crown meanwhile sees the distance for the first time and is now a $2.80 chance to win.
The only other single figure hope in the Randwick Guineas odds at Ladbrokes at $3.30, in from as long as $4 at the start of the week, is the John O’Shea-trained market mover Sweynesse drawn in the outside barrier for jockey James McDonald.
Winner of back-to-back Group 3 races in Sydney last September before a third in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), the nicely bred son of Lonhro ran eighth in the Cox Plate in Melbourne before a first-up second in the Hobartville this time in when beaten just a neck.
Bryce Heys’s Keeper gelding Sworn To Silence is the next best in the markets at $14, in from $17, coming off a Hobartville Stakes eighth under three lengths off the winner he faces again here.
Rounding out the Randwick Guineas hopes are then Waller’s Victoria Derby winner Preferment out from $51 to $61 and $81 roughie Rhodin Drive who is in from an opening triple figure quote of $101.
