Waller Not Brazen Over Beau’s 2015 Lightning Stakes Chances

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller has no doubts his Black Caviar Lightning Stakes 2015 runner on Saturday Brazen Beau is a very good horse, he’s just not sure the three-year-old is good enough to defeat the superstar sprinters he comes up against in the Flemington feature.

One of the top three fancies in the small six-starter $500,000 Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) on the weekend, I Am Invincible colt Brazen Beau runs for the first time since his win in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at the track back on Victoria Derby Day.

That November 1 victory over stablemate Delectation was the three-year-olds’ fourth win at start number eight and followed on from his Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) success at Randwick in Sydney four weeks earlier.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes though was against a field of fellow three-year-olds and how he will go against his older rivals first-up is playing on Waller’s mind.

“I don’t think he can win on Saturday but gee he’s a good horse and you shouldn’t underestimate good horses,” Waller said on his weekly stable update.

Dominating Black Caviar Lightning Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the unbeaten Team Hawkes-trained four-year-old Deep Field at $2.30, the classy entire having his maiden Group 1 run.

The easing second favourite out from $2.35 to $2.45 is then Mick Price’s four-time Group 1 hero Lankan Rupee in gate six for jockey Craig Newitt.

The world’s equal highest-rated sprinter, along with Deep Field and Brazen Beau, is also first-up here and out to become the 10th Lightning Stakes winner in 11 years to win resuming off a spell.

Deep Field, Lankan Rupee and Brazen Beau are first-up in the Lightning Stakes and nine of the past 10 winners of the race were resuming off a spell

Brazen Beau is also on a move in the markets firming in from $5.50 to $5 with Craig Williams in the saddle from a nice gate two draw.

Williams rode the youngster for a solid jumpout at Flemington last Friday and was full of praise for his Lighting Stakes mount.

“I’m on the horse that’s going to be out the back and stalking,” Williams told Racing Victoria.

“Lankan Rupee and Deep Field definitely have to be respected but my horse has got a great chance and you can’t rule out a horse that can win so impressively at Group 1 level in the Coolmore.”

Brazen Beau’s first-up record is good with two wins from three starts, but Waller has a feeling he will be better in the $1 million Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) back at Flemington on March 14.

“I think the Newmarket will really suit him in three weeks’ time but he could surprise us because he’s a very good horse and has come back well (on Saturday),” Waller added.

Early Newmarket Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Super Saturday showdown are led by Deep Field’s stablemate Chautauqua at $3.20 after his first-up Rubiton Stakes win.

Deep Field is the third pick at $5.50 following Darley Classic winner Terravista ($5), with Lankan Rupee ($7) and Brazen Beau ($9) rounding out the single figure Newmarket hopes.

Both Brazen Beau and Deep Field have also been touted as chances to head to England for the Royal Ascot Carnival later this year so a win in the Black Caviar Lightning could be especially significant as it is the opening leg of the Global Sprint Challenge.
