Set to take centre stage as Gold Coast Race 6 at 3:25pm (local), this summer’s $2 million Jeep Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) features a capacity field with the current favourite and Ladbrokes.com.au market mover being Wicked Intent.
Barry Mitchell’s stakes winning colt opened at $6 but is now into $5 to score his fourth win from five starts after suffering his maiden loss when two lengths away second in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) over the track and distance on December 27.
That was run on a Soft (7) and he’s tipped to get a firmer track on the weekend jumping from an ideal barrier five draw with retiring hoop Chris Munce having his last ever ride aboard the son of Wicked Style.
Munce retains he ride after being aboard for the horse’s three most recent runs including the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) win at Doomben two back.
The biggest dangers in Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting are then Frequendly ($6), the rails-drawn Claudia Jean ($7), Perignon ($8) and Single Gaze ($8.50).
With a host of livewire chances, below are our Magic Millions 2YO Classic tips to help you sort the contenders from the pretenders in the summer’s richest race.
1st
#8 Single Gaze ($8.50)
Good value in Single Gaze who had early money come in after a nice barrier six draw that puts Nick Olive’s Not A Single Doubt filly one on the outside of the favourite. She debuted with a good win at Rosehill over 1100m over Zulu Royal on November 1 then returned when narrowly beaten into third by Zoutentant (1st) and Surf Seeker (2nd) – both also racing in Saturday’s feature – in the Wyong Magic Millions Classic over the same distance on December 18. Up to 1200m here and will get a much nicer ride after drawing the outside gate (12 of 12) at Wyong. Barrier and metres work in her favour this time and Damien Oliver replaces Kathy O’Hara in the saddle.
2nd
#3 Le Chef ($21)
Adding top value to the Magic Millions Classic quinella this Darryl Hansen-trained Exceed And Excel gelding from the Sunshine Coast will get a gun run from barrier three with apprentice Luke Tarrant retaining the ride here. Comes off back-to-back wins with Tarrant aboard including a 4.5 length Ipswich effort on December 24 then a one length victory over this track and distance over Real Good last Saturday. Backed up between those wins on the 10 day turnaround so goes well without too much of a break indicating the successive Saturday assignments shouldn’t worry him.
3rd
#1 Wicked Intent ($5)
Firming favourite and based on the form it’s understandable. Nice barrier five draw for Munce and awesome lead-up form with three wins and a second from the four runs to date. Black-type winner at Doomben two back and the wet track didn’t suit in the BJ McLachlan so with firmer going on Saturday will be improving on that upset loss. Needs to handle the metres, was that what got him beat as well as the conditions last start?
