Due to jump as Race 5 at 2:40pm (local), this year’s $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) field will run with a capacity 16 starters lead by Hijack Hussy.
Paying $3.50 in the current Magic Millions 3YO Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au following a gun barrier six draw for jockey Timothy Bell, Tony Gollan’s Hussonet filly Hijack Hussy is the one to beat.
She won two on the trot earlier this prep including a 1400m Gold Coast victory in October and her November 4 Listed victory over the same distance on Melbourne Cup Day.
Her next two starts saw her beaten when third in the Mode Stakes (1200m) at Doomben and second last time out behind fellow Guineas hope Mywayorthehighway in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m).
That was run on a Soft (7) and Hijack Hussy has other form in the wet so can handle the give out of the track on Saturday, the bookies tipping her to turn the tables on her last start conqueror.
The next best in Magic Millions 3YO Guineas betting are then the Gary Portelli-trained Testa Rossa gelding Testashadow ($7) coming off a 1400m Benchmark 72 win at Rosehill from December 20, Gai Waterhouse’s Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes runner-up Echo Gal ($8.50) and winner of that lead-up race Aerobar ($8.50) from the stables of Gerald Ryan.
So will the favourite get the job done on Magic Millions Day or is an upset in the Guineas pending from a longer priced hope such as Chris Waller’s last start Randwick winner Liberty Island ($10) or the David Payne-trained Bold Circle ($13) who also won at that track last start on New Year’s Day.
1st
#11 Hijack Hussy ($3.50)
Another favourite we’re happy to stay on this Magic Millions Day. She’s out to atone for two losses and is ready to return to the winners’ stall. Black-type winner with good lead-up form and a gun barrier six draw for Tim Bell who stays on. 55.5kg suits under the set weights plus penalties and she’s undefeated over the distance (2-2-0-0). Has also won at the track and distance back in October before her Melbourne Cup Day victory. Her Vo Rogue second last time out was a narrow loss and one she can improve on here racing closer to the speed after she got caught back there and in her other recent loss.
2nd
#10 Mywayorthehighway ($21)
Juicy, juicy odds for the horse that beat Saturday’s favourite Hijack Hussy home last time out. Tipping a repeat of the Vo Rogue Stakes quinella but with the placings reversed. Mick Mair’s Swiss Ace filly has won two on the trot this time in and goes up to the 1400m for the first time here. Overcame a wide barrier 11 of 13 draw to win the Group 3 here on December 27 so from barrier eight will be right in the finish again.
3rd
#15 Aerobar ($8.50)
This Sydney raider from the Ryan stables was disappointing in two of her November runs but bounced back to beat a number of these same rivals in the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes last time out on December 18, the same double Sweet Idea completed last season. Form is there for it to be done again with James McDonald riding this year’s hoop from a great barrier four draw.
