Despite being a six-year-old, Our Boy Malachi still has plenty of potential according to co-trainer Michael Hawkes.

The gelding already had an impressive record when he was transferred to Hawkes Racing’s care from John O’Sing after the winter but has managed to uphold his record after winning his first two starts in Sydney.
Our Boy Malachi won both the Fly Handicap (1100m) and Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in November, bringing his career record to 15 wins from 17 starts. The only time he has finished outside the first three was in the Listed Bribie Handicap (1110m) back in May, when he finished three lengths off the winner in fifth place.
He will look to uphold this success in the Listed Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) on Saturday, however Hawkes has warned it may be his last run of the summer.
“When they come to you having won 13 of 15, you know that they are a fairly good horse,” Hawkes said.
“When he arrived he was in great condition and still had more to give.
“In a way he hasn’t surprised us with what he has done and in another way he has. It was good to see him get that first stakes win last time and this is the next step.
“This will probably be his last run for this preparation and the 1200m will be a good test for him.”
This could be because Team Hawkes are planning to target Our Boy Malachi at Group races during the autumn alongside the highly talented Chautauqua and the unbeaten Deep Field.
Our Boy Malachi is one of 10 sprinters nominated for the 2014 Razor Sharp Handicap on Saturday. It may be a small field size but that doesn’t mean the race won’t be exciting and action packed with the likes of Howmuchdoyouloveme, Starlight Stakes runner-up Dothraki, and Aeronautical all potential starters.
The final field will be released on Wednesday with the betting market opening shortly afterwards at Ladbrokes.com.au. Make sure your is up and running before then!
