The fillies and mares plate for three-year-olds and up has accepted nominations on Monday morning, with 31 horses declaring for the race.
Headlining the large nomination field is the Rex Lipp-trained Tinto who is already a winner at the highest level of racing after taking out the Group 2 Queensland Oaks (2400m) back in May. The mare jumped away perfectly to be one off the fence outside the favourite. She tracked up wide at the 500 metre mark and had to make a long run to sweep up to the leaders. She clearly outstayed her rivals, finishing one and a half lengths clear of runner-up Arabian Gold.
The mare was then seen finishing eighth in the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) in June. Tinto was allowed to roll into a midfield position one off the fence but struggled to quicken in time. She just battled over the last few 100m to finish three lengths off the winner.
Tinto has not been seen since that race, which means it’ll be over five months between runs if she makes the final field for the 2014 Travel Associates Classic.
Kris Lees’s Brook Road, who finished runner-up in the Group 3 Nivison (1200m) on October 18, and Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) winner Tales Of Fashion are other notable horses featured among the nominations for the race.
Little Brown Horse, Elusive Storm, and Discreet are three of the highest handicap rated nominations.
The Kelly Doughty-trained Little Brown Horse has finished in the placings in all five of her last starts, which included wins in the Solaria At Jupiters (1200m) and XXXX Handicap (1300m) back in June. The mare hasn’t been seen since June when she finished third in the Desleigh Forster Racing Handicap (1400m) in August.
Brian Smith’s Elusive Storm has finished first, second, and third in her three starts this campaign. The mare won the Bartons Bayside Handicap (1110m) first up before minor placings in both the Iveco Handicap (1200m) and Breakfast Creek Handicap (1350m) earlier this month.
Five-year-old mare Discreet has been unlucky in her campaign however, running in all the same races as Elusive Storm but finishing just outside the placings in each. Her last win was in the Madame Wu Handicap (1200m) on July 26.
