Deep Field Odds-On Favourite for 2014 Salinger Stakes

A final field of 11 sprinters will tackle the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) at Flemington this Saturday after the Lionel Cohen-trained Aeronautical was scratched from the race.

There are just two runners offering single figure odds in the Salinger Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, including odds-on favourite Deep Field at $1.60.

The Hawkes Racing-trained four-year-old will jump from barrier 12 with Dwayne Dunn in the saddle. Unlike many over racetracks, the 1200m at Flemington offers all runners an equal chance at winning so the wide start does nothing to disadvantage Deep Field.

He is the undisputed race favourite following his 100 per cent winning record. The horse has won all four of his career starts along with two barrier trials, including the Listed City Tattersalls Club Lightning (1100m) last time out. The horse was fast out the gate as usual to find the front. He held the pack together for a long way before allowing to be let go and exploding away. He went brilliantly and finished three lengths ahead of That’s A Good Idea.

He is known for taking the lead early and maintaining the field before sprinting home to win it, which the bookies believe he can do once again in the 2014 Salinger Stakes.

His closest rival in the betting is In Cahoots ($9.50) who has already seen his wane as he drifted out from $8.

The Phillip Atkins-trained gelding is in great form however, failing to place outside the top three since August last year. He began his spring campaign with a second placing in the Group 3 Show County (1200m) first up before coming third in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis (1200m) on September 13. He was runner-up again in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) before winning the Listed Italktravel Stakes (1200m) last time out.

In Cahoots is a tried and tested winner over the 1200m distance of the Salinger Stakes and is a serious contender for the win. It would seem punters just can’t look past the favourite right now.

Big Money ($10) is sitting just outside the single figure odds. The gelding has finished outside the top two just once in his 12 career starts and it was a fast finishing fourth last time out in the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint (1100m). Prior to that he won back-to-back races during winter including the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes (1200m) and Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m).

The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained That’s A Good Idea is the market mover of the Salinger odds after shortening from $16 to $12. The gelding has seen a fair bit of money coming in for him after winning the Welter Handicap (1000m) and coming second in the Club Lightning to Deep Field in his two spring starts.

If you can look past odds-on favourite Deep Field there are some seriously in-form runners offering lucrative odds in the 2014 Salinger Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au.
