A field full of Victoria Derby hopefuls faces off in one of the key Cox Plate Day races in Melbourne on Saturday – the Moonee Valley Vase 2014.

The traditional lead-up to the $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday week, November 1, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Dilmah Exceptional Teas Vase (2040m) features 14 final acceptors.

The headliner is the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Kiwi raider Atmosphere in barrier four with Nash Rawiller to ride the Savabeel gelding.

Atmosphere is still a maiden after three career starts but is the shortest priced of the Moonee Valley Vase field in the futures Victoria Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au occupying the third line of betting.

He sits as an $8.50 chance in markets led by Gai Waterhouse’s Spring Champion Stakes winner Hampton Court ($3) and the Chris Waller-trained up-and-coming Zabeel colt Preferment ($7).

While trained in New Zealand, Atmosphere has only ever raced in Victoria with back-to-back Sale runs over 1400m leading into his latest start and black-type debut when runner-up behind Magicool in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington on October 4.

He’ll be looking to go one better on Saturday then after drawing far better than his wide gate 13 start in the UCI Stakes.

The next shortest priced of the 2014 Victoria Derby bound three-year-olds racing in Saturday’s Vase are then Bondeiger and Gouldian at $15 each through Ladbrokes.

The Danny O’Brien-trained War colt Bondeiger is in flying form with back-to-back wins leading up to this including in a Benchmark 78 at Caulfield over the mile on October 15, the horse stepping up over further than 1600m for the first time here from barrier 13 which he won from at Geelong two back.

Gouldian meanwhile fared better in the Moonee Valley Vase barrier draw coming up with gate three, the John O’Shea-trained son of Street Cry to be ridden by James McDonald who guided him to a narrow Warwick Farm win last start on October 8.

Also well fancied in the Victoria Derby all-in betting markets and racing in the MV Vase on the weekend are the likes of Michael Kent’s UCI Stakes fifth placed Teofilo colt San Padre ($17), Caulfield Guineas seventh placegetter Moonovermanhattan ($21) and Royal Standing ($26).

Other notable hopes then include the in-form Gai Waterhouse-trained Duccio last seen running second to Hampton Court in the Listed Dulcify Handicap (1600m) on October 4 and Group 1 winning Bernardini filly Go Indy Go taking on the boys after a Thousand Guineas seventh.
