Gai Waterhouse secured her fourth consecutive NSW Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate on Epsom Handicap Day with classy young colt Vancouver kicking off his career with a nice Randwick win over the favourite.

Waterhouse has launched the careers of a host of her top colts in the $100,000 Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) including 2012 Golden Slipper winner Pierro (2011), Whittington (2012) and Law (2013).
This year she’s got another potential shot for the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, the $3 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) running at Rosehill in April during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, with Medaglia D’Oro colt Vancouver.
In his trial at the Kensington track on September 22 he led all the way with the stable’s No. 1 jockey Tommy Berry in the saddle.
Today the horse put in the same front running performance but with Berry in Melbourne for Turnbull Stakes Day it was a grateful Tye Angland riding the up-and-comer to victory in a Breeders’ Plate result Waterhouse predicted pre-jump.
The Breeders’ Plate turned into a two-horse race down the straight between the top two in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, Vancouver ($4.20) able to hold off the well backed market mover Sooboog ($1.70) from the Hawkes’ stable.
Ridden by James McDonald, Sooboog was not without his chance but just couldn’t match the winner, who pulled away responding when Angland asked him to, over the closing stages.
Finishing off the Breeders’ Plate trifecta in third was then Wolf Cry, third behind Vancouver in the September 22 trial, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained son of Street Cry also worth following over the coming two-year-olds’ season.
Sure to be sent out for a spell now, Vancouver will improve off his debut with a break in the paddock before an early autumn return.
For all the best Sydney betting markets today make sure you head over to Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the Epsom Handicap later this afternoon!
