Famous Seamus Favourite for 2014 Premiere Stakes

Eight of the country’s best sprint stars will run in Saturday’s Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse, offering punters some great betting options and a high chance at backing a winner.

The lone international horse, Famous Seamus, opened the 2014 Premiere Stakes betting market as favourite, offering odds of $2.80 at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Noel Mayfield-Smith’s New Zealand gelding Famous Seamus will run from the widest gate but is still favourite to take out the Premiere Stakes following a Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) win back in May, in which he hit the lead at 100m to go and held off challengers as he hit the line.

The six-year-old will again partner regular jockey Tim Clark, who rode him on a late charge during his last start, Group 2 The Shorts (1100m), to a third placing.

Better at middle-distance running, Famous Seamus could face struggles on the 1400m Randwick course.

Not far behind Famous Seamus in the Premiere Stakes betting market is I’ve Got The Looks at $3.80.

The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained mare drew the ideal first barrier, which means she’ll enjoy a rails run under Hugh Bowman. She’ll also have a 2kg weight advantage over her competitors, which puts her within hope of a fast finish.

The mare’s only win this year came in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1200m) at the same racecourse, in which she also started from the first gate which is a good sign for Saturday.

Other single figure hopefuls for the 2014 Premiere Stakes include Rain Affair and Generalife, who are both offering fixed-priced win odds of $6.

Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) third Rain Affair will start from barrier five under Blake Shinn while John O’Shea’s Generalife will run from barrier four with James McDonald to ride.

Generalife won his last three starts, including the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) but hasn’t been seen during spring racing yet.

Outside of the four single figure bets are runners at lucrative double digit odds who could easily cause an upset in the Premiere Stakes.

Stephen Farley’s Sincero is offering odds of $11. The Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) third is being dropped down in class after finishing bottom of the field on his last two starts, both of which were Group Ones and could easily show up the rest of the field.

Paul Perry’s Wouldn’t It Be Nice ($26) is an outside bet but the Concorde winner will enjoy a start from barrier three under Sam Clipperton.
