Dissident Leads 2014 Makybe Diva Stakes Odds

All-in markets for Saturday’s Makybe Diva Stakes 2014 have opened at bookies around the country following Monday’s nominations with the Peter Moody-trained Dissident firm favourite to make it two Group 1 wins on the trot.

The Sebring four-year-old is one of 15 early entries for the $400,000 Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington Racecourse this weekend and is the leading the Ladbrokes.com.au markets at $3.30.

Originally there were 13 nominees for the weight-for-age classic but the Wendy Kelly-trained last start Caulfield winner Late Charge and Robbie Laing’s four-year-old Don Doremo were late entries on Tuesday morning.

Winner of the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) in Sydney as a three-year-old during the autumn, Dissident meanwhile returned to racing after a failed Doncaster Mile effort (12th) in the wet in April to win first-up at Caulfield.

Enjoying the 1400m and a Good (3) Melbourne track the stallion beat home a class field in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes and is now well liked to handle a step up to a mile and beat them home again this weekend.

Moody has warned rivals the horse is going even better than leading up to the Memsie and will be ridden by Ben Melham again.

“Dissident has trained on nicely and is in good shape,” Moody told AAP this week.

“He has come on well.

“I thought the bigger track at Flemington would suit him better.”

He is followed in the futures Makybe Diva Stakes odds at Ladbrokes by six other single figure chances including Boban ($4.60) and Puissance De Lune ($5).

The Chris Waller-trained Bernardini gelding Boban is third-up on the weekend, the triple Group 1 champ after his first win since beating home It’s A Dundeel in the Chipping Norton Stakes over 1600m at Warwick Farm back in early March.

This time in he’s run fourth and fifth respectively behind Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) in Sydney and then to Dissident in the Memsie where he was beaten nearly four lengths.

Puissance De Lune meanwhile was runner-up in last year’s Makybe Diva Stakes behind the Waller-trained Foreteller, Darren Weir’s Shamardal seven-year-old coming off a Memsie Stakes third.

Defending Makybe Diva Stakes winner Foreteller, last seen running third behind 2014 Cox Plate-bound Tassie raider The Cleaner in last Saturday’s Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley, is then the next best in betting at $8.50.

He’s followed by last year’s Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner who races for the first time since a seventh behind Spirit Of Boom in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) in March, the Reset gelding’s first run since a sixth to Fiorente over the two miles in the Melbourne Cup, and PB Lawrence Stakes runner-up Spillway at $9.

Paul Messara’s Memsie Stakes ninth placed six-year-old Messene ($9.50) then rounds out the hopes under $10 before the markets open right up.
