Cranbourne trainer Robbie Laing is confident his Group 1 bound galloper Lord Of The Sky is the one to beat in Saturday’s 2014 Bletchingly Stakes especially with jockey Dwayne Dunn in the saddle again.
“They just can’t keep up and when he (Dunn) lets him run it’s see you later,” Laing told AAP speaking of the dynamic duo.
The speedy Danerich colt, capable of extremely fast sectionals, combined with Dunn for the first time last start at Caulfield on July 5.
There was no stopping the three-year-old and his hoop that day with Lord Of The Sky blitzing their rivals by a minimum four and a half lengths to win the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m).
That was the up-and-comer’s first Group assignment, and their first black-type run since a disastrous 13th when failing to beat any other runner home in the Listed WJ Adams Stakes (1000m) at the track in early February.
Lord Of The Sky pulled up shin sore after that run however and was sent straight to the paddock, their three runs since returning off the 12 week spell all hinting at bigger and better things to come.
That starts on Saturday back at Caulfield Racecourse in the $150,000 Group 3 Slickpix Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) where Lord Of The Sky will start the clear favourite.
He and Dunn are drawn in barrier five and face a quality field that includes smart Adelaide raider Nearest To Pin coming off a win in the Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Final.
Laing is hoping his level headed horse can make it three straight wins on Saturday and win a race their sire Danerich failed to do when seventh back in the 2006 Bletchingly Stakes on the back of an eight length barrier trial win.
“This horse has got the same ability as Danerich but he’s got a brain,” Laing said.
“Danerich was off his head. He’d go home and run a trench into his paddock, he’d just run all day.
“This horse just goes to sleep when he goes home and he does it at the races too.”
All going well Lord Of The Sky will continue onto the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival including a possible elite level test in the $400,000 Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 30.
