Beginning his racing career under the guidance of British trainer Harry Dunlop, Green Moon stamped himself as one to watch when winning the 2011 edition of the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) before finishing second to Southern Speed in the Caulfield Cup.
Performing well but unable to secure a race victory over three starts through the 2014 Autumn Racing Carnival, Williams said the team is confident the Montjeu entire will perform to a typically high standard, and hope for progression to October 18th’s feature race.
“He is in absolutely terrific order,” Williams told Racing Ahead.
“We will send him around again and see where we get to with him.
“I suppose you have to look at races for the Caulfield Cup with him and hopefully he is good enough to get there.”
Returning to racing for fifth in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) during the 2014 Spring Carnival, Green Moon was disappointing when ninth in both the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and was never in the running to defend his Melbourne Cup title; finishing well off the pace in 21st.
Running on to finish fourth amongst classy competition in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) first-up this year, the stallion out of Green Noon appeared to be in line for a return to the winner’s circle in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 8th, but was run down in the final 50 minutes by champion stayer Fiorente.
Finishing seventh in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) last time out, Green Moon is currently available at generous odds of $41 for success in the 2014 Caulfield Cup with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
